A lot of teams have also changed their names. St. John's University changed their team name from the Redmen to the Red Storm. Here in Florida, where I live and Alabama, where I was born, it's not that big of a deal. Many universities, schools and teams use Indian names. It's because the history and lifestyles, for example cuisine, comes from the Indian heritage.

Don't get me wrong, to each his own, I have found in life that the people who get the most upset have no reason, more non-Indians get mad about nicknames than those with Indian in their blood. This could be because most Americans are so interlaced with so many different cultures. I don't consider myself anything but human. Once again, to each his own, my opinion is there are way more issues to discuss and fix like why have we made a full irrelevant ;)A lot of teams have also changed their names. A little bit of it all. Ridiculous yet smart marketing that got everyone believing diamonds are worth more than they are, unsavory business practices, disregard for labor standards. Would there be such a rush for cheap expendable labor if people realized how low-value diamonds are and stopped buying them?I also wear diamonds but I think she was referring to much worse things DeBeers is involved in. Even though all their diamonds go through the Kimberly process now, their move to Botswana is a whole different set of horrors.
They really are a horrible company. There's a reason they have to be so shady to get their products into the US.

You might want to let them know it made it much further than just the gym family. I saw the blood diamonds logo on the website and I know of several who others who saw it or received info with that team name/logo.Thank you all again for enlightening me on this topic, and thank you for stressing how important of an issue this is without coming down too hard. I don't post here often, but I have been on this board for a few years and I have grown to respect many of your opinions.
At this point (other than this thread) the only place this team name was mentioned was in an email that was sent out to the gym letting them know that the gym would have an IOC 6 team this year. The team evals are not even until July 13, so the team has not been formed yet. I spoke to the owner at the gym last night and he admitted that while they had heard the term, they did not fully understand the meaning behind it. He admitted that it was an uneducated decision and they would be taking the steps to correct their mistake. They will be issuing an email to the gym with an apology and they will be changing the team name.
I'll post the new name when I know it :)
Thank you for mentioning this. I will be sure to let them know. I don't think it was on the website but i do know they had created a facebook page for the team (as they did for all the teams). I'm sure they will be taking down the page or at least editting it when they have the new name. They take great pride in the reputation of the gym and what this name represents is in no way the morals or example that are taught in the gym. It is definitely not the way they want to be represented and they are taking the steps necessary to correct their mistake.
There was a link to the Facebook on the main website I think. We have friends there so we try to keep up with what is going on via the website.Thank you for mentioning this. What gym are you with? Maybe we will see you at a comp this season. I would love to say hi and introduce myself in person if we do.
