I saw that Top Gun Orlando will have live tryouts but kids will have individual appt times, they can't congregate, and they have to leave the gym immediately after their scheduled time. They also have to bring water, no fountain use.

Fountains made me cringe even before covid-19

For kids throwing high level tumbling, I think in-person try-outs are safer and smarter. I'd rather Suzy do her tuck on a spring floor then the grass...then again, most of y'all SMs have tumble tracks now so... ;):cool::p:D

As someone who has consistently trained on both grass/dead mat/wrestling mats as well as tumble tracks, rod and spring floors, I can say that moving from one the other takes some getting used to, even when you’re using both at the same time...an AS shouldn’t be throwing anything crazy on grass for sure! Even solid skills because the spring floor really does just that- spring.

On one hand I know if a kid goes without tumbling for 2 months, they could lose it.

On the other, I get concerned that kids may get injured, etc.

Not sure what the answer is.

I've never been a big fan of kids engaging in a whole lot of home tumbling and I can't lie -- home airtrack things make me a tad nervous.

On one hand I know if a kid goes without tumbling for 2 months, they could lose it.

On the other, I get concerned that kids may get injured, etc.

I 100% agree that with two months away that kids will lose their tumbling skills. I also think a level of strength will be gone as well, without having to pick up a person and keep them above your head.

Now with that said, there are still gyms out there that think that after two months of zero gym time teams will be ready for Summit with only 4 weeks in the gym to prepare. Am I the only one that thinks this is crazy?

cant really call it "Summit" when all the rules have been thrown out the window........but I agree no team can be "ready" after 2 months off.........just a $$ maker for you know who.

We don’t know when we will be able to start up again, they use a school to practice so it’s up to the school to allow the kids back in for any kind of practice along with the phases.

From what I understand in order to cut costs this year for parents there isn’t going to be practice wear, no new uniforms and talking about doing “local” (well local for us is still a 3 1/2 hour drive) one day competitions this year and we will be doing all IEP instead of Varsity with a possible end of season event out of state for elite teams. We were also told returning athletes get a discount due to the season being cut short. Also heard teams won’t really be formed until the fall and probably won’t start competing until February. I’ve also heard possibly reusing sections of routines and not doing full choreography.

I do see a lot of butchered technique. I'm out of the coaching game but I see videos my former athletes or their parents post of their home tumbling and while I always cringed at how dangerous it was, now I'm even more scared of the horrible technique they've resorted to. I didn't even know human heads could go back as far as I see some of these kids throwing them when doing "tucks" and "layouts."

They would have had to re-learn these skills if they stopped tumbling entirely. They're still going to have to re-learn the skills, but now it will be a matter of correcting a few months of new bad habits, and in my experience, bad habits are harder to break than brand new habits are to teach.

As far as our program, we're just, waiting. We may do some tumbling camps and clinics in July once we have possession of our new gym (!!!!) but we're not wanting to advertise that just yet in case we get a massive spike.

We have scheduled placements/tryouts for August. That seems like our safest best and to just have a slightly shorter season. Though, where we are, starting teams in August is more the norm. We don't really make cheer a year round sport here yet.

We aren't collecting tuition in June and July. We qualify for some government assistance which should get us through until we can run some kind of classes again!

I don't see kids losing skills in two months to be the issue for most especially since most gyms have kids compete a level down anyway. The lack of endurance will be a hurdle for most of the industry, but the kids excitement to get back in the gym will help for awhile at least.

We aren't in phase one in our state regardless of realistic classification, but I believe cheer gyms are "gyms". We had a posted notice on our door (days after we were already closed voluntarily) that we had to close because we were a gym.

We are developing a plan such as you described, I agree with that part. Just curious why you think cheer gyms aren't gyms.

Youth sports has similar rules but a lot more language about “Social distance, but if that is not feasible, wear masks, clean hands etc..” Although inside a gym, its really a sport. Much like Club volleyball and basketball. Though played/practiced in gyms, I guarantee they’re not following Gym rules. Just a thought. I don’t know who you check with on that but I think it should be. They will probably NEVER say gyms can have contact. But youth sports will get more lax.

Comps for the upcoming season will not be on a level playing field at all. Unless we are regionally restricted.

Great points. We are still not open here and the governor does not seem too keen on opening gyms or youth sports, I think our easiest path to opening might be calling the gym a childcare center or camp, lol. The spaces are large enough to social distance for now and I think a lot of gyms have garage type doors to keep open for air circulation. Hosting events in the parking lot if they can do it seems smart too because anything outside seems to be favored.

Thank you for saying this as clearly the NE will have some sort of competitive disadvantage. Beyond that, while I recognize that Texas, Georgia, South Carolina etc are on different tracks than we are with restarting I am STILL have a hard time getting my head around cheer travel next year. Are those states going to allow large "phase 4" type events? Is there a plan B for virtual performances or something similar? I hope the programs around here can make it through this.

Our gym is following the letter of the law and is working closely with county and city government to do the right thing. I've been super impressed by their commitment to the athlete's safety, and all the safety measure they've put in place.

Teams will be split up for at least June practice, I think in groups of 10. Only one group of kids in the gym at a time. July will be reevaluated when we know more. No new warms ups and back packs as planned. Practice wear cut back, emphasis on local comps, comps don't start until 2021, nothing that you need to fly for. Paid summit bids only.
