All-Star Varsity Scoring Update: Squad Tumbling - 75% = 100%

I personally don't care for the vague description of "scoring equitably". I would like some clarification about this new rule does it mean that both 15/20 and 20/20 standing tucks on level 4 can achieve the same exact score, assuming execution is equal?

Guess what guys, you probably don't need level 1 teams anymore, just absorb all those athletes into your 2-5 levels.

....before the thread gets carried away with rampant generalizations just because a kid is on a level 5 and doesn't have a full doesn't neceessarily mean they are a lazy worthless cheerleader that snacks on little Debbie cakes and watches episodes of Dance Moms while everyone else is at practice.

And no, I'm not defending my kids, they don't have fulls, and theyre not on level 5 either. But I'm sure there are some decent kids out there working like dogs that just arent as naturally gifted as others so it comes slower. Let's not throw every less than level 5 tumbler under the bus.

It should be about the new varsity scoring. In what world is 100% and 75% the same? In what world is an A and a C the same? One is passing, and that is okay, but the other is excelling and that should be rewarded.

I would love to hear from the coaches that were given more "wiggle room"...

The way I understand is both teams would score the same even though the one team has squad standing tucks.

Like I said on the other thread - isn't that what we always want to strive for is being average. This will just make scoring more complex and unfair - can you imagine how bids could potentially be rewarded.

I really do understand this because my eldest cp never progressed above a level 2. The child could not tumble, fear being the reason, but Lord that child could dance and everyone wanted her as a base because she would dive to the ground and get squished rather then let her flyer touch the ground. BUT I have found after too many years that she was an exception and not the rule. EVERY gym has those kids to whom tumbling is the devil. But they bust their hump in other areas. My concern, and 1 child immediately pops to mind, is those children who keep moving up and really are not masterful in anything. A team sport really does require an entire team, not 75% of one.

The interesting thing is that there are SO many threads that complain about poor technique in tumbling & injuries due to forcing a kid to throw a skill that they are definitely not ready for. What I read into this change is that it will allow coaches/choreographers to take into consideration what each athlete brings to the table without the pressure of forcing them into situations where kids get hurt. Of course, the assumption is made that these coaches will continue to teach proper technique & push the skills to be performed at the full squad 100% level. Of course there is another assumption that each athlete would want to have that skill that is required of the level.
I'm sure the judges will be able to notice when a full squad throws a skill vs. 3/4 of the squad & will be rewarded accordingly just like they notice when you have 1 less stunt group or front spots on the groups etc. The goal is to have a well rounded cheerleader; but I have seen many kids go through the mental blocks & tumbling is VERY difficult for some people. It makes me very sad when talented kids are compelled to leave a sport out of fear as opposed to helping them get through the blocks. At the same time, it makes me very angry when coaches/choreographers throw things into a routine WAY before they are ready just to hit the rubric/scoresheet & to see some very serious injuries come from it.
This sport is continuously evolving & I would hope that this change is done under the scope of safety as opposed to punishment & taking away things. I trust that the coaches & myself as a cheer mom would continue to guide my kids to be the best at a pace they are ready for.
AND I'm sure another debate will follow on what is more important - 100% skill with average technique vs. 75% skill but flawless in technique ;)

I have tears streaming down my face I'm laughing so hard at the first part of your statement. I hit shimmy before I even finished reading. Maybe because we watch Dance Moms and ran home from practice on Tuesday nights to see next episode.

I should add- a good coach should be able to put together a team to work to the best of their ability to begin with, WITHOUT needing some extra easy scoring boost. This, to me, rewards the bad coaches who complain that they can't win against so-and-so gym's tumbling. Tumbling is ONE area of the score sheet. Beat them in another! Dance, jumps, stunts, whatever! Stop using 'we don't have the tumbling' as an excuse for your team not winning. Drop them a level, make it up in other areas, do what it takes in a legal, moral, ethical, non-dangerous physically/mentally/emotionally way to help them succeed. Be super clean! Have the most synched, well-executed extensions in the country, be the fiercest dancers..DANCE WON WORLDS for F5 (among other things, but dance is the great equalizer). DO YOUR JOB, stop expecting other people to do it for you..

Varsity- stop being enablers. Stop thinking as much with your pockets, and start thinking what's the best for these kids. Not what YOU want them to do because you have control issues.

Okay, I have work on the brain and I'm thinking in terms of grades. 75 = C; 100 = A. You don't get an A if you get a 75. You get a C. Plain and simple. You shouldn't be able to score the same if you have 75% versus 100%. Even the title of this thread, "75%=100%" kills me. I'm terrible at math, but even I know that that's not true.

That's what we were thinking. While 75% would max out the difficulty, 100% might bump up the overall impression.

Seriously this is a bad ideal to set forth to our kids.I am sorry I do not say to my child a don't worry getting a C is ok it us the same as an A. Not only is Varsity telling athletes that being average is the same as outstanding, but it will allow all parents an argument to advance Suzi above her skill level. Honestly nugget = the new level 5. I am sorry don't gym owners have enough problems with impatient delusional parents.
