All-Star What About Coaches Gym Hopping?

I don't have a problem with a coach leaving at the end of the season. Just like kids leave after the season is over, coaches do to. As an athlete, you won't (or shouldn't) know what any issues they may have had behind the scenes. The fact that they left after the season is over, actually shows me the person is trustworthy, and will finish his job.

yeah i see what you mean..but the coach that left us talked bad about the current gym he is at now so i dont understand why he made this decision. he didnt even go to the end of the year banquet and support the team he coached. and he never had a formal goodbye to anyone at the gym.

That's very common. I don't understand why people do that either. Unfortunately, it's just the way some people are. Not to stick up for him, but maybe he felt uncomfortable going to the banquet, because he was already at the other gym. Don't let it get you down. Bigger and better things :)

i think a lot of times coaches who decide to switch gyms are misunderstood. everyone is too quick to shout out about betrayal and hipocrisy, but in many cases it's a matter of livelihood. just like athletes, coaches need to be able to work for organizations that not only provide adequate renumeration, but also ones that promise growth and are consistent with coaches beliefs. i doubt that the transition is easy for any coach, leaving kids and coworkers is never fun.

The majority of the states in the US are right to work. But that means they can't be forced to join a union and that they can be fired for any reason. People are free to enter into agreements/contracts if they prefer. However, unless the job is highly skilled, most non-compete's aren't enforceable. A business generally doesn't have the right to prevent someone from earning a living.

However, non-solicitation agreements are very common in business and should be mandatory with all cheer gyms. So that would give a coach to leave, but would prevent him/her from contacting any of the remaining employees or customers (athletes/parents) and asking them to move.
WE HAVE BOTH! But they do work if it is a reasonable mileage! Make sure you get it from your company lawyer!

I don't agree with gym hopping period. If you have a reason to leave your gym, that's fine, but going through three gyms a year not only brings stress on the coaches to replace the child and the program, not even the team itself so much as the other kids on the team. You've let your team down. It's even worse when the coach leaves. They've let the whole gym down. Kids that were close to that coach aren't anymore. Young kids wonder where they went. Your coach is supposed to be there for you, not leave you in the dark. If there is conflict and fights, go ahead, but if there isn't a reason, I find it to be totally unacceptable
