What if what were doing isn't cheerleading, what if it is something else? (serious)

do those teams require a separate tryout for their competition team?

I'm under the impression the teams are completely separated. They have different coaches, rosters, schedules, etc.

I don't know if the competition teams have tryouts or recruit athletes and put them on the team without tryouts, similar to what basketball teams do.

okay, then i'll change what I said. separating sideline cheer and competition cheer, rather than allstar. that doesn't mean we can't call all competition cheer "allstar", just because it's not what allstar means to us, doesn't mean we can't use the word to encompass all that is competitive cheer.

Say the name ever gets changed... how would we explain to everyday people what we do briefly?
Do we say "oh its like a mix between gymnastics, acrobatics, and dance" people might say it almost sounds like cheerleading...
or do we say, "its like cheerleading but competitive and more athletic"

I feel like there is almost no way to get away from the word cheerleading

Ok. Well my issue with the word cheerleaders. It is way too broad

I don't do the same thing as a dallas cowboy cheerleader.

I absolutely think so I dont know if that question was directed towards everyone or not...

well they don't really cheer at all in the sense of tumbling and stunting. Most high school cheerleaders that do sideline cheer at least stunt at their games. they're more dancers than anything. I think more basketball teams actually call their "cheerleaders" dancers like they should be, like I know the phoenix suns girls are called dancers, and aren't the lakers girls called dancers too?

I don't think we need to get rid of the word "cheer", because that is the foundation and the roots of the sport. It helps maintain the sense of history of where the sport came from. Figure skating is still called figure skating, even though the skaters haven't had to do the compulsory school figure round in many years.

I think the "leading" part is more important to drop, because in Sport Cheer, the athletes don't lead the crowd.

What about high school cheerleaders? Most high schools will never have cheerleaders that only compete, does the fact that these girls have to support their football team make them not athletes, what about those whose primary focus is competing and they just sprinkle in sideline because its a requirement but train just as hard as allstar cheerleaders should theirs be considered sport? Another thought, if we called it something else couldnt schools have have a cheerleading team and a stunt and tumble team? Good luck getting schools to host two seperate types of cheer teams.

Exactly. I think there are too many ppl hung up on the idea of changing it. Especially to some ambiguous term. Which serves no purpose other than to separate ourselves from sideline cheering. It still boils down to education!

Hopefully I won't insult anybody, but I've even heard accounts of school cheerleaders who appear to want to ride the coattails of competitive cheer! I've read so many posts of ppl hearing the word cheerleading, and automatically think of sideline cheering. When once in a while it's the opposite. They say they are cheerleaders, and when someone inquires if they do all the flips and tosses (knowing full well they are referring to competitve cheer) they just nod their heads.

I am all for separating the two simply by designating one Sideline Cheer, and the other Competition or Competitive Cheer, and relying on educating ppl on the difference. Which will come much easier when it is recognized as a sport and reaches greater exposure. It's less of a hurdle IMO to say sideline cheer is what you see at football or basketball games, and competitive cheer is where you attend competitions and perform routines. As opposed to going with some completely new term, and then having to explain it has a little bit of cheerleading, gymnastics, stunting, dance....
