For the 2013-2014 season there will be 8 schools. Azusa Pacific, CA, Baylor, TX, Quinnipiac, CT, Oregon, Fairmont, WV. The 3 new schools are Alderson-Broaddus, WV, Kings College, TN, and Hawaii Pacific. Nationals will be at Azusa Pacific next year.
Just saw on another thread that U Mass Dartmouth will also be adding the program.
What do you mean by signing to the team? Like scholarship wise?My daughter is on the team at Azusa Pacific. My oldest daughter was on the team the year it transitioned from competitive cheer to acro and tumbling, it was actually called stunts and tumbling its first year. My oldest daughter didn't like it, it was just too different for her. My second daughter absolutely loves it. My girls all cheered/cheer at FCA in Pittsburgh with glitter sparkles, and gems. A & T could not be more opposite with volleyball style uniforms, no hairbows , weightlifting gloves, and mouth guards. THIS IS A SPORT guys! These girls start working out during the summer, then practice 3 days a week for 3 hours and on non practice days they do cardio and weighlifting with their trainers. They train for 7 months for a 2 month competitive season.
I agree that the video is a bit boring. I've been to one live meet at Azusa and its much more fun in person. The Azusa announcer is very knowledgeable and explains what is going on. You can watch any of the meets on the different schools' websites. Just go to the athletics portion. Azusa charges to watch the live feed but Baylor and Oregon's were free.
A & T is under the USA gymnastics umbrella. The girls tumble on a dead mat and I highly doubt that will change. The athletes recruited are all star and high school cheerleaders and competitive gymnasts. The all stars and gymnasts had to learn to tumble on a dead mat but they all seem to have succeeded in that. They have to start running off the mat because if you see where they land at the end of their pass they would be off the mat if they didn't. Not sure why this would bother anyone. This is definitely an evolving sport and I'm sure between now and when my daughter graduates it will change some more. Every sport does, look at all star cheer and how much it's changed in the last 10 years.
There are 3 new schools coming on board next year...one in WV, Kings College in Bristol, TN, and HPU. Kiara Nowlin and Mary Lou Retton's daughter both signed with Baylor, and Kelsey Rules just signed with Quinnipiac. I think you will see more girls signing in the future as all stars become more comfortable with the style and format. I'm telling you now, if you want to be a well respected athlete, this is where you want to be. Azusa can't keep A & T shirts in stock, and when I went to the athletics portion of freshman orientation the Athletic director was wearing an A & T shirt.
I guess my main point of this is to ask the all star community to support this sport and give it a chance! Now if I can just get A & T and USASF to talk and not have their national championships and Worlds on the same weekend...sigh.
It's an NCAA sport so you are signed by the school to participate. Once you sign you agree to abide by NCAA rules until your season is over. For A and T that would be the end of April. And yes for some girls this would mean a scholarship, too. What do you mean by signing to the team? Like scholarship wise?
