This system really asks for girls that are all around competitors. There isn't room for more than 1 specialist on the team.

With ASac and Nastia you are leaving out certain events. So you MUST have an all around girl on the team who can put up a decent vault, bars, and floor score. I believe one of those girls is no doubt Weiber.

I don't think that anyone will disagree that those 3 are going to be on the team.
So that leaves 1 spot on vault, 1 spot on bars, and 1 spot on floor. Maroney is able to put up a huge number on Vault, but not as great on the other 2 events. And they need to do well in the team qualifier as well so more than 3 will need to compete.

I think we can all agree on Weiber. She DID just win world all-around (although some would speculate on how the technicalities of that)..so she's set. ALTHOUGH- some of these will be hypothetical based on whether or not certain members make enough of a recovery. I'd hate to count out Aly, but I'm not sure if she fits into the puzzle. Injuries at training camp could mess everything up as well.. :( SO difficult..

That is true. Aly is great, however, her and ASac would be vying for the same spot I believe.

It comes down to experience vs. youth. There could be a big problem if Aly and Jordyn go 1 and 2 at Olympic trials. In that case, it could be very bad news for Alicia. Team USA's biggest problem is that there are a ton of good combinations for the Olympic Team, but they need a GREAT one to take home gold.

I was reading an article, and the US could very easily bring 2 teams to the Olympics and have them place top 5.

Like Rich said, they do need to do WELL in qualifications, but they can afford to not be in first, there's 8(?) spots going to finals, USA can take top 8 soooo easily even adding a girl in on an event she's not overly strong on, who you can take out when finals come around (for example, Maroney on floor)

I have an odd feeling Maroney won't make the Olympic team, or maybe it's because I don't think she should. Alicia (who is now training an Amanar and a front handspring double twist) and Jordyn can kinda handle vault, with Shawn coming in, in all likelihood, with an unclean Amanar or a perfect DTY, but still most likely putting up high 15, MAYBE a 16 (but as we saw with Maroney at the Visa's, a 16 with an Amanar appears to be a bit more difficult, as she performed it much better than Shawn did in Beijing and Shawn got .05 more). Floor, I'd say Jordyn, Alicia, and Shawn can obviously put up the highest scores there. It's a shame Nastia wasn't coming back to floor, she wasn't the greatest floor worker, but obviously still capable of a good routine that scores rather high. Beam, I'd say Shawn, Nastia, and Alicia (maybe Jordyn?) will be putting up the best scores, and they're consistent (providing Alicia can learn to hit that damn mount..). So then you're left with bars. Jordyn can put up a decent score, but other than her, it's all high 14s, low 15s, which as it stands is not as competitive as they need to be. That's where I'd say Anna Li may come in. Nastia is definitely going to be putting up a high 15, possible 16 or higher, with her bars routine if she gets back in good enough shape (and I have faith that she will). Shawn can put up an alriiiight score on bars, and if she works a bit harder could put up a pretty good mid 15s score, but I think the USA may consider Anna here as she consistently can put up a low to mid 15 score. Just my opinion, however the USA is then left with only 3 floor routines, so it's a bit difficult. I guess we're counting out Chellsie, who could take Anna's place in what I just said, and compete a pretty good floor routine.
(assuming Chellsie goes in)
Floor: Alicia, Jordyn, Shawn, Chellsie
Vault: Alicia, Jordyn, Shawn, Chellsie(?) the situation I described really leaves only 3 vaulters. I wish Nastia would come back with a sick 1 1/2 again..
Beam: Nastia, Shawn, Alicia, Jordyn
Bars: Nastia, Chellsie, Jordyn, Shawn

That's ALL based on saying that ASac will recover in time, get back into the shape she was in AND improve from the shape she was in.. she has a tough road ahead of her. Courtney Kupets did it in 03-04 but it's extremely difficult to do.

I don't know if I agree that Maroney shouldn't be on the team. Her vault alone gives the US about .6 higher towards the team score and she was second in the AA at Visas, proving that she's pretty all around. This world championships should be great for her confidence and training. She's got more experience now and will be able to control her nerves/adrenaline for the future. If she can keep improving and focus on bars a little more in the next year I definitely believe she'll be on the team

Nastia also has a short amount of time too, she really is going to need a little bit of luck, no injuries and lots of strategy. She's a busy girl right now and is going to need to put a hold on everything that she's doing just to train. If she can pull it off it will be great.. and I can't wait to see her floor routine too ;)

Raisman will take Sacramone's place on the team if she doesn't make it back in time

Shawn and Chellsie - We'll just have to see if they can stay healthy long enough and go from there

Gabby Douglas might sneak on there too.. She's really underrated. She's actually a great clean all arounder. I was a little surprised they only used her on bars for team finals, she has a beautiful DTY on vault and very clean beam (better than Raisman)

don't get me started on Raisman, one of my least favourite gymnasts of all time...
I agree that everything I said about Alicia is purely based off of her recovery, but from what I knew, it wasn't as severe as it could have been, reports said she was walking while still in Tokyo the day of/after her injury, so who knows! My post was based off of all returning gymnasts being in top shape.
Maroney's vault is obviously a strong point, but just the fact that she's a clean all around (as well as Gabby) doesn't mean that the scores are high enough. Providing Alicia and Shawn come back to full health, both can put up much higher floor and beam scores than both Gabby and McKayla. Chellsie could, and I only included Chellsie in the off chance she'll be okay for the Olympics (it's a darn shame such a talented gymnast has missed so many great opportunities in her career).
I think I'd rather Anna over Gabby, because America has the vaulters, and the beam workers, so they don't really need her there, they need bars, where they'd probably only use Gabby again, which Anna is better for. There's way too many gymnasts to choose from, like always :p
quick question.. Nastia's confirmed she's only doing beam and bars correct? 'cause we both know we want that Travis/Nastia floor routine.. :p

Not to instigate, but I was wondering why Raisman is one of your least favorites. I can't decide if I like her or not as a gymnast, such a lack of consistency. Is it her technique, skill? Not challenging you, just curious.

I personally am missing the presentation from her. Bross takes the cake on least favorite though. You can be strong and powerful but still have stage presence. ASac has more of an elegance about her than the other 2.

There's a certain mature gracefulness about ASac, different from Nastia's more ballerina grace. Shawn has Bross' power but with personality. And despite what people would like to think, stage presence/personality DOES matter in some aspect.

Aly's not my favorite, but we'll see how the other set does at Pan Am.

Well.... You'll just have to see ;)

it's her technique, and like Rich said, her presentation.
I have to say I don't like Bross AT ALL either, but watching Aly do bars (my favourite event) just irritates me so much. I can deal with Nastia's terrible technique in dismount and her crossed feet twisting, but something about Aly just irritates me.
Asac is, speaking of USA seniors right now (as Katelyn O'hashi applies to this as well) the only power gymnast I like, because she still has elegance. It takes a lot for me to truly like a gymnast overall. I like watching Shawn on beam, but I'm not a huge Shawn fan. I like watching Maroney on vault, but nowhere else. I think there are only 2 or 3 gymnasts I actually like all around (Nastia and Christine "Peng Peng" Lee are the only 2 coming to mind right now)
