Way back further than I care to think about, I was in the Youth Orchestra and our conductor used to do random nail checks and if they were over the tips of our fingers he would clip them off. The rule was no longer than the ends of your fingers and heaven help you if they were. We had to get special permission to grow them a bit longer for prom. I can't see that ever happening now, but sometimes at training I wish I could still
