I reeeeeeaaallly like her!

Beautiful routine! The artistry and grace in this is amazing. And that stuck landing at the end - wow!

I love stuck landings out of diffucult tumbling passes - like Catalina Ponor's 2012 olympic floor routine in EF where she stuck all her passes perfectly - one of my favorite floor routines of all time.

Can we discuss Eythora Thorsdottir?

Not only is her last name amazing, but she's insannnnely graceful.

Beautiful - she runs a little too much before her round offs (a tumbling pet peeve of mine ;)), but besides for that she's got so much grace and artistry. I wish more American gymnasts were like this - but artistry really doesn't seem to be appreciated as much in US gymnastics scoring as power and sharpness are IMO, so most of our top girls are the powerhouse type. Nastia Luikin I think was our last one of the artistic types.

It's because the current COP favours the execution and difficulty of skills more than the artistry of the actual motions. Eastern European gymnast have always been classically trained; they have gorgeous body lines - something which I believe is attributed by genetics. Liukin may hold an American citizenship, but she's more Russian than anything. Women like her and Komova will never be as muscular of a gymnast as, let's say, Biles or Weiber because of their genetic make-up. Her coach was her own father - a Soviet Union gymnast, which explains why her training regiment was different and more "European".

In countries like Russia and Romania, their training incorporates ballet. Ballet places emphasis on smaller details, such as the brushing of your feet through the floor so you can push through your toes when you perform leaps, pushing shoulders down to maintain a long neck and even the way you hold up your fingers. They train the muscles around their metatarsals which, when engaged, creates that beautiful arch in the foot (again, this is also dependent on genetics and how young they start stretching their feet). Their training approach benefits their rhythmic gymnastics programme more so than it does with the artistic, until the COP changes, I don't see them being able to get a step ahead of U.S.A.s women's artistic gymnastics team.

I feel like men's artistic gymnastics is more balanced, it favours different types of physiques. For instance, the more muscular gymnast (usually European/American gymnast) tend to focus more on somersaulting (head over heel rotations) elements while the more slender gymnast (Japanese/Chinese/East Asian) focus more on twisting (lateral rotation) elements. You don't have one type of gymnast dominating all apparatus so you get a more diverse set of champions.

To be fair as beautiful as the Russian lines are, slender legs, fingers and toes, I think they've all forgotten how to perform. Artistry isn't just about lines it's about putting some feeling into a performance. Afan and Mustafina seem to be the only Russians at the moment who grasp this concept. The rest of them are just dead in the eyes.

This just seems like the worst idea ever. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I happen to like specialists and it seems like they're moving further and further away from them.

yep. the rationale seems to be to "help" gymnasts from not so great countries get to the olympics and have a shot... is the olympics not about being the best and competing against the best for one true champion anymore? all four having to compete all around will knock out a lot of hopefuls, i am sure. US better step their game up in bars, ASAP.

not sure i'm totally understanding the extra 2 qualifying team members for the top countries rule...? (not sure the FIG currently understands it either, TBH)

since this has become our random, all things-gymnastics thread... any thoughts on the new 4 to a team rule? insane.

Gymnastics Olympic Team Size Reduced To Four - Gymnastike
It's absolutely ridiculous. Don't know if it's possible, but I hope it gets overturned or changed. I personally miss the magnificent 7 days, but that's besides the point. Of the 2012 team, I wouldn't want to get rid of any of those to cut down to 4. It's just ridiculous. One of the tweets I saw from an AP reporter said the FIG just wants everyone to have a medal and orange slices after. Funny, sad and true.

Sadly, it doesn't feel like the best of the best when they have to uplift those who are struggling. And yes, bars...bars...bars...

Playing Devil’s Advocate | The Gymternet

This piece helped me make more sense of it. I'm not a fan, mostly because it seems to be making things unnecessarily complicated. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't appear that it will have much of an effect. If anything the US will become more dominant because we have so much AA depth.

So for clarification. The Olympic team will consists of 4 athletes. (Keisha, Sue Bob, Lianne and Pennsatucky). They will compete on all events and in team finals because they are the U.S. Olympic team.

However. Bertha is really good at vault and Billy Jean is really good at bars and they're US athletes. Bertha and Billy Jean can qualify at worlds to go to the Olympics to try to compete in event finals? Or am I understanding wrong.

Wouldn't that add an additional day of gymnastics because there would need to be a day for the D-Team to try to qualify for events? Or would previous scores from qualifications just usher them on in to finals

Or is it saying someone like McKayla Maroney would be SOL in 2020 because the team only wants Gabby and Simone's.

(I only skimmed the article. I'm on my phone so it was tldr)

Yep that's exactly it. I assume they will do the specialist qualifications the same day as team qualifications. I'm pretty sure that in the past for the smaller countries that don't send a whole team, they do qualifications the same day. I don't think this part has actually been figured out yet though.
