Question, for event finals, would the two "specialists" not on the team, count towards the 2/country rule? So in above scenario, if Keisha, sue bob and billy Jean all place in top whatever in floor, only two can go, so billy Jean is SOL after all? Or are these "specialists" not counted for that, or are they even still doing that? I'm assuming they are, I haven't read otherwise.

Yep that's exactly it. I assume they will do the specialist qualifications the same day as team qualifications. I'm pretty sure that in the past for the smaller countries that don't send a whole team, they do qualifications the same day. I don't think this part has actually been figured out yet though.

If I were a 2020 Olympic hopeful I would be somewhere trying to figure out if I can get dual citizenship right now.

But honestly I don't see the need. If your country already can't field a team of 5 you probably can't field a team of 4 either and if you were already there with the sole purpose of competing in events, what changes for you?

I just don't see Team Malaysia (I dk if this is even a team) having 4 girls and then some other girls that went to worlds and performed well on the events but weren't good enough for the team, out scoring Russians, Chinese, Americans and etc to even qualify for the Olympics

Does that make sense ?

aren't Laney Madsen's parents from slovenia or somewhere like that? if she's still aiming for Tokyo, she may want to reconsider which country to represent. seriously. if she even still does gymnastics? idk.

haha I wish. I am from Slovenia. :) They lived in Germany for few years and her mum is Bolgarian. So if I uderstand right Laney could compete for Germany and USA (and even Bulgaria?)

You have to be a citizen of the country you represent, but she very well could have dual citizenship with the US and another country. I believe some countries also have rules about having to live there a certain number of years preceding the games. So, in theory, yes, she could be on any team.

She's a good gymnast in the US. She'd be a great gymnast in Germany or Bulgaria. I'm sure her dream is team USA, though..

I don't know. I don't follow her.

But Simone Biles has dual citizenship. USA and Belize.

Is the FIG taking advice from the USASF now? Doesn't seem like the best or most well thought out decision to me. I feel like the five member team was fine? I think it's kind of an unnecessry change and it's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out

Why did they change it to four.... I thought five was ok but four just seems so small. Do all four scores count?
I haven't been keeping up with gymnastics as much as I use to anymore so this is all new news to me......

I'm all for them adding an extra specialist spot, but why not just add a sixth "specialist" spot and keep the five member team? The athlete could be like an alternate and still be on the floor/receive a medal with the team, but only compete in quals on their selected events. And from what I've read the two per country rule will still apply to event finals and such

basically because subtracting one girl from each team (only the top countries get the option of adding two specialists) allows more room for other countries/teams to compete. I guess because the games are only so many days long, there are time constraints of having any more athletes compete.

I don't agree with it, but that's my take on their statement.

I believe the format with this would be all four compete on each apparatus and three count.

You do not need to be a citizen to change your country, it's actually quite easy. Right now the Ukrainian mens team is facing a problem right now because the Azerbaijan team is recruiting a lot of their team members.

To take the attention away from the new stupid rule, if you don't follow Laney on Instagram, she posted a video of some of her mess ups at practice and it's hysterical. I highly suggest watching. Definitely made my morning.

(Clarification: They aren't those falls where you're cringing and screaming "why do people think this is funny!?!" It's like lighthearted funny.)
