Agreed with Rachel Gowey on beam. That was beautiful.

However, I really don't think that DR vaulter should have gotten the score she did, sit or not. Her reaction was amazing, but I don't believe that landing warranted it.

Ya, the slo-mo front view they showed looked like she touched but it's really hard to tell IMO unless you're on the side.

I legitimately have no idea who will be on the team for Rio (aside from Simone as long as she stays healthy.) I don't really follow the careers of any of the girls on the Pan Am team and they killed it. I'd hate to be Marta come olympic selection time ... or one of the amazingly talented girls left off the team.

So much this!! All of those girls killed it earlier. They'd make the Olympic team for pretty much any other country, but I'd be highly shocked if any of them made the U.S. team next year. I'm especially proud of Maddie Desch having a solid day despite her beam fall on the two to full. I really hope she can hit it in AA finals!

Whenever I watch Yamilet Pena (insane DR girl) vault all I can think of as she's running down the runway is "don't die don't die don't die don't die don't die don't die"

Seriously, her guardian angel is working overtime for her. (here's her vault from Worlds)

Yeah I refuse to applaud her gymnastics. She got lucky this time, but the fact that she hasn't fractured her spine yet is nothing short of a miracle. She (9 times out of 10--I think she's only actually landed that vault twice in competition) is not ready to perform that vault and her coaches are irresponsible to let her try.

Yeah...... I was like "I don't really know as much about gymnastics as I'd like to but she does not look capable of competing that skill. Or even attempting." There was like zero technique. I don't think I'd consider that gymnastics. That was worse than 99% of the spinning balls of death you see in cheer. Holy guacamole, batman.

Exactly. She is a perfect example of pushing progression over perfection and attempting difficult skills too dangerous for her. And she's being rewarded with a good score. I legit gasped out of fear when she landed that. And she reacted so excitedly. I didn't understand. I just kept thinking, but why?

she does that EVERY TIME SHE VAULTS. like in the video I posted she barely escaped quadriplegia and was basically like "Aw shucks!" after she stood up. I really wish FIG would downgrade the Produnova like they did the Amanar to discourage it from competition....but they won't. Vault is the easiest event to break in to in gymnastics (as you really only need to train one skill--Pena's other vault is a yurchenko 1.5 IIRC) and in FIG's view the more countries competing the better. Let's just pray they don't break their necks in the process.

Totally agree! She needs to go back to learning proper take off and block skills from the springboard before she attempts any skill. I am shocked at the scores she received!

It's ABSURD. Like check out this Egyptian chick doing that vault and basically landing on her neck:

14.950.

ARE YOU F-ING KIDDING ME.

where are these judges coming from??!! I haven't followed gymnastics as closely as I have in the past but I have never, ever seen judges reward bad technique. And the coach's reaction - he's thrilled with how she landed!

I can't imagine having to watch someone legitimately train that day after day and watch those landings. How any coach could encourage that severe lack of safety is beyond me. I can see training it into a block pit, and doing timers on the real thing. But seeing that, 10x a day would have me re-evaluating their level of readiness.

he's probably thrilled his athlete isn't a quadriplegic.
