Those L turns are very hard. Beam can be a heartbreaker - it's one of those things where you can have a really good day or a really bad day no matter how hard you work or how amazing you are. It also gets very contagious to the rest of the team whenever the athelets who go before them fall.
Very similar to stunt falls and hits in a cheer routine - where the flyer who never falls goes down and then the next thing you know 2 or 3 more stunts fall in a usually consistent routine.
Some gymnastics cosches will put their most consistent atheltes (not necessarily the highest scorers, but the ones who never fall) up first on beam in the line-up, when usually the order on the other events is weakest to strongest. They do it to prevent the entire team falling or watering down their routines out of fear - my CP once was involved in a rotation where this happened to her entire team - almost everyone fell and the ones that didn't really underperformed cause they were so afraid (boy was the practice after that meet ugly :/).
Russia needed to hit their beams to do well, and it just wasn't a good day for them - they still all had a beautiful style if you ignore the falls and I love watching them.
Komova's tweet was inappropriate of course, but I just chalk it up to them not having as much PR training as we do. At least she didn't call people "haters" or "snacks in the grass". Haha.
I still feel so bad for Romania - I follow Catalina Ponor on Twitter and she hasn't tweeted anything at all since before the qualifications when she usually tweets all the time. The team really could have used her, but she wouldn't have helped them on bars even if she did go and that was their biggest meltdown. I really hope they get their "bid" ;) to Rio at that event in April and do well at the games.
