High School Banning Uniforms To School On Game Day?

OK I was all set to read this article and try to see the other side of this, but within the first sentence they lost me with this ridiculous dad. Jeez...no wonder people stereotype cheerleaders as elitist. :rolleyes: The parents in this article are just plain too sensitive. Come on - his daughter's feelings aren't hurt that someone thinks her uniform is vulgar. Her feelings are hurt because she likes to wear the uniform to school and be the center of attention. (I don't know that there's anything wrong with that, I think everyone likes attention. Just calling a spade a spade is all)

I do totally see the school's point. It's not really fair to say "We have a dress code, and it applies to everyone...except these young ladies." And the argument that they are worn for the school so they should be ok is silly - like @Ashley said, you don't see people running around in Speedo's and leotards and those are also worn for the school.

I guess it's strange to me because my kids' schools have such crazy strict dress codes I can't imagine them being allowed to wear a cheer uniform to school anyway, so I don't understand why people get so up in arms about these things. My older cp wasn't allowed to wear anything with a color to school. White t-shirt, dark blue jeans, white sneakers. No colored shoes, no belts, no jewelry - not even a colored hair tie. I think they would have loved to have been able to even wear a football jersey on game days!

My girls wear their uniforms on gameday. They were approved by the school. It even states in the handbook in the dress code that cheerleaders are exempt from the hand rule. But I fit everyone of my kids so I know what their uniforms look like, and I know they look approriate. They wear their black under armor under it and look fine.

(Gangs represent themselves with colors, but I have no idea why these schools think that not allowing color means that gangs won't exist. I guess it's just one more way the school prevents it from being so prevalent in the schools. But they're gangs. They figure out a way. Although lol I doubt a cheer uniform would have represented gang activity, you never know, do you?)

It's crazy. My cp wouldn't wear her gym stuff anywhere but cheer, because it's all black and gold and she didn't want to be mistaken for being in the Latin Kings. And we live in a nice area!

Jeez what a spirit buzzkill...I saw this on YouTube earlier in the day, and right now I am literally laying out my cheer uniform to wear to school on our first day tomorrow! And tomorrow is my first time actually wearing it somewhere other than my room - I'm a brand new cheerleader, never have cheered before trying out this year! We have 2 styles of uniforms, but tomorrow we have to wear the older one, a similar skirt to this girl in the article with just our shell, nothing underneath, no bodyliner so it;ll be sleeveless (good thing it's going to be hot and humid out!) In the previous years at our school, i've seen skimpier cheer uniforms being worn, I wasn't a cheerleader then but i def remember when I was in 9th grade the Varsity squad wearing pretty short shells with no sleeves a few times to school, nobody banned them or the flyaway skirts that were hyper short. I think the girl's uniform in this story is fine, seems pretty modest if you ask me, and this is a new cheerleader speaking, i still don't know all the terminology yet lol!

This is so ridiculous I couldn't help but chuckle when I read it. I certainly can understand the mom who agrees with the rule because her daughter was being subjected to inappropriate gestures, but most of the time wearing uniforms only encourages team and school spirit. I had to wear a garbage bag over my wrestling uniform during school hours many times on game day just to make weight. I would much rather see a well dressed cheerleader in uniform than a garbage boy.

We can't wear ours, either. Literally, even if we are wearing it for a pep assembly and we have to walk down the hall for some reason, we have to put pants on or we get in trouble.
On game days, we just wear our warmup jackets with jeans or yoga pants.

I think if a cheer uniform is distracting to someone (or a short skirt or shorts), them the problem lies in the person not the uniform. Oh guys are being inappropriate to girls in cheer unis? Discipline the guys don't punish the cheerleaders... It's called self control and respect. Dress codes :rolleyes:

We have cute ladies version football jersey's that my girls wear on game days. Our school doesn't have a rule about NOT wearing them, they are super supportive of my team. However, we have a long sleeve top, and it's still hot up here in NE in Sept/Oct. The jersey's have the school name on the front, and the girl's number is her year of grad. Then on the back it has her first name. They wear their bows and all wear the same shorts and sometimes eye black too! (Plus, sometimes you have those girls that join just to wear the uni, this solves that!)

Here's my take...if you aren't allowed to wear your uniforms to school during school then will you decide to not cheer at your school anymore? if your answer is yes, then you aren't a true cheerleader. When it boils down to it, it's a trivial issue. Instead of making it a big deal, roll with it and come up with a super cute outfit that you can wear to school.
If you make a big deal about every small decision that might get thrown your way by the school, administration, coaches, parents, etc. then you will spend most of your life being disappointed. Those who rise to the top are able to roll with the punches and others around them learn from that.
As a coach, I was finally able to pick out and buy uniforms this year I was so excited. I had the cutest uniforms picked out that were red, black, and a little grey. Administration said no, the uniforms had to be mostly red or mostly grey. Mind you the previous uniforms were 1/2 red 1/2 black and very little grey. I was so upset at first and then I just told myself to find a uniform that rocks those colors. I wasn't going to let a matter of color take away from the excitement of getting new uniforms. Once my mindset changed the whole teams mindset changed. What mattered was we were getting new uniforms (we only get them every 5 years)!! BTW, our uniforms are almost all grey, administration loves them. I love them. The team loves them. 2 years ago my squad was told they couldn't wear uniforms, the girls reacted the same as most people have, in outrage. But we bought super cute jerseys they wore to school and they no longer had to worry about spilling food or drink on their uniform or getting pen on it. It all worked out for the best and they're totally over it now. :)
