Agreed. But that goes both ways. Darlene needed to be ready for the consequences of firing her too, which they seem to be currently experiencing. The consequences of firing a coach (without a non compete)? They can go work somewhere else near you.With everyone talking about what they would have done had they been in the coach's/athletes position, what would you have done if you were Darlene? You find out an employee has been making plans to leave and start a gym that would directly compete with you, you really wouldn't fire them? You have to protect your business and that was the option she found best. No, the timing wasn't the best but if you're taking the risk to do something like that while still employed you need to be ready for the consequences.
And the whole 'while she was employed' argument makes no sense to me. I know I do not work in cheerleading, but I will be interviewing/planning for my next job while I still have my current one. No one in their right mind would leave a position before looking for or securing another.
