Absolutely. Anything involving minors should have a background check.

If you can't teach in a school you ace no business working with the kids after school either.

I would just like to applaud these girls for coming forward and stopping this monster. If any girls are reading this and have experienced the same thing, please tell someone and stop people like this. Thanks for sharing this story!

In order to volunteer for ANYTHING at my kids school parents must be fingerprinted and submit to a background check as well as taking a class. If I recall it cost around 50.00 total. There is no price to secure our childrens safety.

I think it's also a wake up call to parents. You may love a coach to death, but never be too trusting, especially if your gym has not run background checks. Never leave your minor alone with no one else in the building

If I wanted to substitute teach at my old HS (where I was once a student), I had to get fingerprinted and the like. And I've known some of the kids since they were little ones..

I can't imagine the pain and hardship these girls went through but I give them so much credit to stand up and face their attacker. Even though he's behind bars, those girls have to deal with this for the rest of their lives and something needs to be done so other girls don't have to do the same.

Would a background check do much? I don't know how it works in the US, but generally without a conviction, it wouldn't show up on a background check, and in Canada a person can also pay to remove minor crimes from their record (although that isn't the case for assault, sexual assault, murder, etc.), so I'm wondering truly how effective a background check would have been in this situation, afterall, it did say he wasn't convicted the first time right?
