Not sure how far along your cp is in the IB program, but it is no joke! And gets more demanding as they move into their junior and senior years. I do not know if former-cp would have been able to handle traveling for AS, cheering for HS and doing the full diploma.

CP is only just starting the 4th week of her freshman year, and you are right it is no joke! So far she has spent the entire weekend doing homework. I am not sure how she will be able to handle competition season with all the work. We had heard that it would be very difficult to do both HS and AS cheer and maintain a decent GPA in IB. This is the reason that she chose to do AS only. I am not sure if I will be able to handle it in her junior and senior year!

I jokingly tell parents that having a whip arabian through to double and the most amazing game day presence known to man is not a resume item.

Also, you will not be able to explain to colleges: "Gee whiz I only had a 3.2 in high school because of HS cheer and all stars but I AM a 2014 World Champ and HS State Champ!"

I almost missed finals and EOC testing because i had competitions. Juggling just school and allstar was hard enough for me, with my GPA dropping from a solid 3.8 to a 2.9 this year. It probably wasnt the best idea to move to a large gym in my first year of high school...
(my gpa dropped 2nd semester because of summit and uca. I missed the total allowed days to miss school, and it killed me in English, Geometry and Science)

My biggest reminder to kids is that SCHOOL IS FIRST. I expect kids to have mixups in their priorities every now and then.

However, you'd be surprised at the number of PARENTS I deal with who order their child's life in such a way that the priorities are:

1. All Star cheer
2. School cheer
3. Studio dance.
4. Other really time-consuming and travel heavy activity like pageants or travel soccer.
5. Academics and homework if she has time to get it done in the car. If not, we just email the teacher and say she didn't do it and ask for an extension.

Do not sacrifice your kid's schoolwork for cheer.

I love to be the first person to run over a Y2 mom's unicorn and tell her that cheer won't pay Suzie's bills so they should STOP taking her out of school early every Wednesday and Friday for privates at another gym and dance classes at a nearby studio because Ds and Fs in 3rd grade (due to missing work) are not cute.

My daughter has had to miss a couple basketball games and take demerits so that she could be at an important practice that fell close to a nationals competition.
Dont be afraid to use your demerits, just make sure you can use your merits to makes up for them.

they're just a negative "mark" against you. it usually goes something like, "every missed practice equals 1 demerit, 3 demerits and you sit out a game, 5 demerits and you're off the team." everyone may use them a little differently, but the idea is the same.

This year I am a senior and I have always juggled two allstar teams and high school cheer along with my honors/AP classes. It hasn't been easy with an hour and half drive one way. My school coaches haven't really dealt with anyone else doing allstar so at first it was like pulling teeth trying to get them to let me leave early. They still really don't work with me which is why I've decided to only do sideline this year. It's sad but I've decided that it's better for me to put more time and effort into allstar since I made a level 5 this year. When my mom drove me to and from it was easier because I could do my homework in the car while she would drive now it's harder because I drive.

Four hours one way! How long have you juggled that drive? Four hours one way is very intense. I am impressed. I thought one and a half one way was a lot. There is no way I could handle four. How many times a week does your CP practice? Any advice for juggling the distance and making it work is appreciated.

We have been doing this for a year and 5 months now..
We travel from houston to dallas.
Right now we have sat, sun, monday practices.
She goes up on saturday stays the night, then gets home sunday around 8pm.

Monday she leaves after school at 330 to make it to her 730 to 930pm practice and then gets back home around 130am in the morning.

She does her homework in the car and any studying she has.

Tuesday mornings are the hardest. She has to be at school by 715am. So she usually goes with a messy bun on her head haha.

When the majors, nca and worlds practice schedule comes we are at the gym every single night for 2 weeks straight usually.

Luckly we have a car pool. 3 of us moms take turns.

Kayla is on cheetahs, varsity cheer at school, student council, and president of the stars special needs club at school and maintains straight As. Trust me if we can manage it anyone can!

Just use the car time for studies. Make sure her grades dont suffer. Thats our breaking point. If my daughters grades drop she will not beable to do it anymore. Its our "deal"

Wow!!!!! Congrats to your CP!!!!! Are the 3 girls that car pool with her also on Cheetahs? I am so impressed she is able to juggle all of that!

I think it is phenomenal that she is able to do that, maintain straight As and still participate in school clubs and cheer. I do also think her 3 day in a row practice schedule definitely helps with that, expecially since 2 of her 3 practice days are on the weekends, which is typically not the norm for most practice schedules. How the heck do the girls manage to keep up with their school work the weeks leading up to the big comps, having to be at the gym every night?
