I thought so..considering the amount of popping, bum-centric songs, booty slappin and spanky-flashin/butt-wigglin..

Like so many things in life, a lot of the moves are going to be in the context done. One girl poppin for half a count is not the same as a whole 8 count of just booty poppin (or even hardcore poppin). That sorta kneeling in a straddle spread (I can't think of how to explain it- except it's usually done by center dancer at the end) will look COMPLETELY different and have a different connotation when done by two girls. Drop-squat thigh spreads, to me, are always icky. Maybe it's my 'adult' mind (Ahh, at the ripe age of 22 lol), but I can't think of an APPROPRIATE connotation for that move. In what perfectly normal, family-friendly existence does spreading your thighs in that manner NOT equal/emphasize something inappropriate?

I've never heard bum-centric before... I like it.

What about other inappropriate things in the music or lyrics or even titles?

Like violence? (Bohemian Rhapsody)

Or just a title that many find offensive: Niggas in Paris.

I'll be very curious to see how this is going to be consistently applied.

Question: What about Cali-Freakin'-Fornia
We all know that "freakin'" is generally used in the place of the F bomb... Is it inappropriate? I know it's judges' discretion, but maybe an opinion on this?
Actually, this exact question came up about 4 to 5 years ago. A coach from another program asked me why we weren't calling California AS on it. To be honest, it was the first time I even considered that 'freakin' was a substitute for a cuss word. It's not that I didn't appreciate that perspective-the thought just never crossed my mind. I never looked at it that way.

Wondering if I was living in my own world, I ran the 'freakin-fornia' issue by a cross-sample of NCA judges and NCA Corporate Employees. About 7 of the 8 people I sampled had a reaction consistent with mine--they were oblivious to the potential issue. Because of this, we officially OK'd it's use--meaning CA was protected from getting called at our event since they went through their due diligence in having their material approved.

Somebody mentioned that the 'Freakin' phrase has been removed from their music this season. If so, then heir decision to do so must have been an attempt at self-policing, as it hasn't been an issue with our judges even once in recent years.

7 out of 8 people didn't think 'freakin' was a substitute for a cuss word?

I have to be blunt and say that I find that incredibly hard to believe.

And I wonder if Warriors 2003-04 dance to "Aint' Nothing Dirty Goin' On" would pass muster anymore since it's about a Whorehouse.

I've been thinking of that dance the whole time I was reading this thread. I remember the UCA coverage on ESPN doing an interview with the team before they went on and they said "just remember there is NOTHING dirty goin on." cut to Jeff Webb talking about how there was a deduction for any inappropriate music or choreography. This deduction is nothing new, just a reminder that we might need to tone things down and think about the image we are putting out for the public to see.

Side note: favorite dance ever. Happy is a genius for making a slower Dolly song work like that!

Love that dance! I'm sure Happy played a huge role in it, but Eric Little actually choreographed it.

It was actually Bill Seely that was raking us over the coals for the dance and because we weren't "coed" stunting.

Yes, Eric did most of it, but Happy tweaked it.

It was such a fun year.

I was just wondering if bending over so your back is to the audience, putting your hand between your legs and slapping your...butt is appropriate? hahahaha Hand to God a boy on a team did that this weekend? Needless to say, It didn't happen on Day 2.

OMG, something similar happened at a comp here a couple of weekends ago, it was more a running the hand up his leg to a butt slap, though. i know this particular team here is going to NCA, too. The entire audience at this particular comp sort of gasped and fell silent briefly and then there was all this rumbling noise...LOL. It just had me smh.

This is going to sound awful, but just stick with me.

I feel like this issue blends well with another one (although not NEARLY as extreme), and the smartest thing anyone ever said about it was 'I can't describe it, but I know it when I see it.' I imagine many of you will get the connection (and I'm not going THAT extreme), but I feel like while there's a certain (rather large, considering we have teams like TG ;) ) gray area of what's acceptable, I feel like there are certain SET things we could at the very least mostly (if not entirely) agree on that are out of line. And it's in those moments where we're in a competition that we're suddenly uncomfortable that we know what probably isn't appropriate. Since we're in this culture, we have a higher tolerance than most. I wonder if it's anything like in Muslim cultures where the women are covered? Not full on head-to-toe, but at least the hijab..some people think it's horrendously conservative and oppressive (In complete contrast to us and our issue!), yet many women are totally cool with it, even happy to wear it. They're so used to it, it's not a big deal anymore.

:deadhorse:Needed to use this..

Seriously... for the most part we are talking about people under age 18 or those older representing a SCHOOL.. w/ that being said, I think everyone in this forum knows what is appropriate and what isn't.. one lil booty pop count and a shake of something, most-likely FINE... but when we are looking at 8 counts upon 8 counts of gyrating in uniforms that are so small that when they do who knows what can pop out, with a song that BLATANTLY suggests something, then it becomes inappropriate...

I don't think it takes a genuis to say something was inappropriate b/c most of the crowd there watching will most likely feel the same way and I am sure SOME of the parents and families of the team feel the same. As I said before we are talking about Minors or students representing schools, so I don't think NCA or anyone is at fault for making this clear, I feel like everyone is trying to push the envelope and it can be pushed entirely too far... there are fierce dances that don't need to look like all the girls/boys are missing are poles... there are GREAT uniforms w/o risking a wardrobe malfunction... there are great songs that you can use w/ clean versions and for all of the coaches/choreographers out there if you can't realize you are working w/ KIDS that are representaing an organization no matter what state your are from or area, you need to realize there is a line!
