OK. I just gotta know... What's with wearing make-up to practice? (for both cheer and dance)

I'm not talking everyday make-up that you wear anywhere... I'm talking full blown competition make-up. I keep seeing this on Facebook, Twitter, etc. - pictures of kids heading off to practice and they have red lipstick, glittery/smoky eyes, etc. What in the world? These kids usually range in age from 6 to 12.

I get it for camp and choreo (I mean... I really don't, but at least that's a "special practice") but for regular, weekly practice? Just... Why? (and pleeeeeeeease don't tell me it's so they "get used to wearing it" - that's nonsense. No one does that)

Seriously... Stop it.

On occasion (maybe 1-2 times per season), my kid will just feel like getting all dolled up for practice and go full hair and make up....this is usually when she needs some extra motivation to perform better for whatever reason. If she does this, she is 1000x more likely to take a selfie and post it on social media. It would then make it appear that she gets made up for practice, but it's definitely not the norm. Can't say this is the case for everyone, but by the looks of things the majority of athletes that practice during the same times my kid does, do not go to practices with make up on.

That and poofed, teased comp hair... I don't get it. I poofed my hair for HS cheer camp and stuff like showcases, but not practices. It's too much work to get out, and takes way too much time to do on a daily basis. I don't get it

I don't do any other hair then regular hair usually but here lately my kid wants to wear make-up and not just to practice lol. I usually don't let her wear makeup but only to practice because I feel like that's the only place it's acceptable. (Red lipstick/ pink lipstick kind of thing) if I took her out in public like that I would feel a little awkward people looking at her. She said it makes her feel fierce and pretty. Her team consists of older kids so they usually compliment her and I think she eats that up. Also I see it rubbing off. Every practice I feel like more and more girls put more effort into their appearance. Not sure if it's a good or bad thing but for Jaylen it usually gives her some attitude. She is generally always in a good mood but I think it opens her up more. Not really sure lol.
I don't do full comp makeup. Usually just lipstick, blush, mascara, and maybe eyeliner. We save her eyelashes for competition.

Eta: ok lol that sounds like full comp makeup so I'll pretty much say we do comp makeup minus eyeshadow and the whole glitter smokey eye look ..I can't even put it on my kid during competitions I don't even bother for practice. I'm not skilled in that area lol

Back to the topic of gym attire, I used to work at a well known national franchised gym (like, a fitness gym. Not cheer) and we also had dress requirements. Sports bras only weren't allowed for women and men couldn't go shirtless or wear those shirts with the sleeves cut open all the way down the sides. But we usually wouldn't make people leave, we would just mention it as the person walked in (away from others) and 9 times out of 10 they would just throw a shirt on over it. The members agreed to it in their contracts. They may not have read it, but that's kind of their fault for putting their name on something they didn't read fully.

I don't have a problem with gym dress codes as long as everyone is aware. I do have a problem with it being called a "distraction" for the opposite sex. It's not that persons fault if what they wear distracts someone else. I always saw it as more of a cleanliness thing. No one wants to use the communal gym equipment your fully exposed chest, back and armpits have just rubbed up against.

Now I know it's different for different places. My best friend a former roomie is a Crossfit junkie and never wore anything beyond her sports bra and spandex.

@krisboo
You mention lashes... I have to say that I am SO HAPPY that our gym does not require false lashes this year.

Oh and I think some makeup is okay for practices but kids who get made up all the way every practice remind me of the ladies who go to workout at the gym in full makeup. You are there to sweat not for a fashion show!

Ewwwww I just saw that disgusting gif of nailpolish and I tought I am gonna throw up. And the next second I went to Facebook and saw a picture of someone having those dots all over the face. I am not sleeping today and I still feel like I am gonna throw up in next few seconds....

SERIOUSLY. I don't get how people to full on hair and makeup for summer practices.... I guess they must not sweat cause all that makeup would come dripping off their face.

i already can not stand wearing mascara for practice let alone make up, no idea how people do that
i hate wearing make up at comps too, i don't even know how to properly apply eye shadow haha

Same. Make up is probably the only thing I ever hated about cheer. I couldn't do it, didn't want to wear it, didn't want anything to do with it. (I think I look better without make up anyways). I can't imagine wearing it to a practice and sweating with it on. And I sweat at anything physical. No thank you.

The last three competitions this season we were doing smokey eyes, it was crazy hot and i ended up looking like a Panda at every single one. Good thing i only realized after running around like that for hours.

Fun story:
We're currently in Dallas for CA SuperCAmp, and this morning Kahuna came into the viewing room (which was jam packed, of course) to talk to parents about the camp schedule, etc. My mom and I were some of the farthest away, but I was able to understand just fine. So we leave after a little while (didn't get there early enough for good seats, but won't make that mistake tomorrow) and we're shopping in the Children's Place, and my mom says, "Do we need to get her a hat for hat day?" And I was like... What? And she says, "Didn't you hear the guy at the gym talking about top hats?" (Referring to the TopCat and BlueCat competitions)

I mean I personally wear make up to the mailbox so that nobody catches me slippin'..... This face has to be snatched alllll the time....

But I don't get children wearing it to practice... or to choreo... or in the case of a certain 9 yr old that I see on her mama's instagram...out to dinner or out on the boat. Like why is your 9 yr old wearing lipstick... in every picture.. I don't understand.

Some gyms although not required, strongly encourage competition look for practices.

But whyyyyyy? (in my whiniest voice lol) Every other performance activity in the universe is able to practice, rehearse, choreograph, etc without it - as do the most successful cheer gyms. So I'm not buying the "to get used to it" or "so we can see how everyone looks, with everyone matching" excuse. I would love to hear a logical explanation for why a 10 year old needs red lipstick and glittery smoky eyes for practice (and why people then question why cheerleading is seen as pageant-like and not a sport... )

Yes.

Like... My 19 year old? Yes. Everywhere she goes. But I wish my 12 year old would ask me could she wear red lipstick to dance camp. No. N. O.

I don't get it. I'm sorry, but I couldn't care less if she "feels fierce" - she needs to feel 12. The only place she wears make-up is if she is performing. Her school does not let any of them wear it - K-8, no make-up at all, even lip gloss. Irish dance? No make-up for anyone 12 and under, unless they are competing championship levels (new rule this year).

I don't get it. Different strokes, I guess.
