I know we have lots of tech-y people here. What is the average cost of web design?
Not a designer here, but I work in communications for a regulatory agency and we're currently in the process of a complete overhaul. We're a mandatory county bar with 5200 members, so we're looking for a new website that will integrate our membership database as well. It's pretty detailed, because it has to be completely compliant with open records and our retention policy mandated by the state. The program were are looking at is around $50,000 for the system and web design (one time), then around $3,000 monthly for hosting and usage.

This is probably not the norm though, lol. We're a weird group.

The best answer is "it depends" since "web design" is pretty broad :p

What type of project are you looking to do? More details can probably help you get a better answer, if you want/can elaborate.

FWIW, I have a website for my online portfolio and the costs for me are minimal since I designed and manage it myself. (It is extremely basic and I only use it to showcase my designs when applying to jobs/freelancing.) I only pay for hosting and for my domain. It is probably less than $100 a year.

ETA: Small, small businesses (like small restaurants) and personal sites are going to be a lot cheaper to build/maintain. Bigger companies/sites are gonna cost more. If you don't have someone to maintain it, its gonna be an additional cost everytime it has to be updated unless you pay a monthly fee to someone to always maintain it. Theres just a bunch of factors that determine the cost of the project.

I realize that was broad. It'd be small business/my practice. Currently it's just an assignment for an online marketing class where we have to price everything out, but it will be real in the near future and I don't even know where to start. Like basic doctor's office site, a few menu options/different pages. Nothing crazy.

I see now. For starting out, you'd have to buy a domain name (the website address) and then hosting for the site. These expenses though are minimal if you're not looking for anything fancy. The design/managing part will cost the most if you hire a designer.

I found this site though, might help for your assignment? How Much Does It Cost To Build A Website In 2014?

Thanks! I priced out the domain and hosting already (steps 1 & 2 of assignment lol.) How much on average would you charge for a simpler, similar design job? I know there's lots of variables so if that's too difficult to answer, I get it lol I just figured I'd utilize the fierceboard's wealth of information lol

I've never freelanced as a web designer since I'm mainly print and digital, so I'm not quite sure how long a normal web design project would take to complete.

If you want to do a guesstimate though, I'd say an average, well practiced, and competitive web designer freelances for $50-$100/hr and a simple website might take 20-40 hours to complete in full. So that's about $2,000-$4,000 to build the site. Again, that's just a rough, rough estimate.

The New Edition biopic looked incredible, so BET has saved itself from my scrutiny.

Lifetime, on the other hand, shouldn't touch biopics with a 10-foot pole. Britney didn't even give her blessing for this to be done. Whereas New Edition threw their full support behind the BET biopic and the actors casted were SUPER talented and dead on in their portrayals.

Homegirl doesn't even look like Britney, let alone capture her essence.

New Edition biopic was everything. I love fine men, and a vocal. The story was very good and showed the good, bad and ugly. All 6 members were involved and it was apparent. Nothing about the film was cheesy or typical of biopic. Anyone familiar with their music would enjoy it, and anyone new to their music was introduced to an underrated group that basically revitalized the R&B group. I've had all the music stuck in my head for a week.

This Britney movie is only to cash in on the fact that Knee is doing GOOD. That she's happy, and healthy in Vegas. Her album was good. They want to exploit her mental breakdown which is ugly to me. Britney is not just the pop girl who lipsyncs and shaved her head. She changed the landscape of pop music, she also is a lesson of the dangers of the industry. She had 0 control over her career even before she got sick. And I doubt the movie will touch on any of that. Like how she was not allowed to sing in her real voice or make music she liked. How she has a whole album that remains unreleased. How she was not allowed to make songs about her personal life-break ups, divorce.

Can you tell I stan for Ms.Spears?

YES! This is why I go nuts when people say she can't sing. She has a beautiful voice, but was forced to alter it to sound sexier. She's struggled, yes, but she had also had so many triumphs in life that should be touched upon and celebrated. Remember the picture of Bobby Brown coaching Woody McClain on set? Remember when TLC worked with VH1 to do their biopic? Artist consent is everything. You get so much more than right to music, you get them on set, working with the actors, story details that you can get from anyone else, etc.

And then you have trash like the Aaliyah biopic. I heard that her uncle is currently working on one (we all remember how terrible the Lifetime one was) and they cast a girl who looks JUST like Aaliyah (her name is B. Simone, look her up). I'm excited for that one.

I swiftly turned off that Aaliyah movie when I saw a skinny, light skin girl play Melissa Elliot.

Had Britney been marketed as a singer in the way Christina was, she could've been able to both sing and dance. We'd be having a different discussion. But they wanted pop. Christina had to really fight to be able to really unleash the voice she was gifted.

Britney has a reputation of being one of the sweetest people in music. I've never heard anyone say anything rude or negative about her. She deserves more than a movie that will probably spend most of its time highlighting her darkest hour, because they don't have the rights to use her incredible music. Like they can't mention that despite her meltdown, Blackout is considered one of her best albums.

Without the music biopics are trash. I'm all for giving people their flowers while they're still with us, but I'm also a believer in telling a good, accurate and respectful story too.

Yes. I think Britney needs to commission a biopic on herself, because her life story has so much potential. Start with her childhood in Kentwood.

I actually liked the Michel'le biopic, but that's the only exception to my anti-Lifetime rule.

And LMAO at the casting for Missy! You could tell it was done quickly and thoughtlessly.

I didn't watch the Michel'le one and honestly I know it was just in retaliation of Straight Outta Compton, a film I loved. I don't condone what happened then, but I do believe that he has grown from the person he was.

Anyway The Queen is carrying 2 babies because she always has to top herself.

And the fact that she picked JC Penny for the maternity photoshoot... oh Yoncé, how I admire thee.
