No matter what team, or what gym, large or small, or what kid, I don't think 12 year olds belong on a senior team. Ever. I know it does happen, but 12 is simply too young to hang around girls that age. They hear everything from bad words to parties to boyfriends. Things they shouldn't be exposed to at that age. It can cause them to feel left out (because they don't understand what "sloshed" or " 3rd base" means) or try to act older (makeup at a younger age, older clothes) to be more like their older friends. While I understand they are at the gym, they are still hanging around with girls and boys 4+ years older. If it were outside of cheer would you let them say, go to the mall with 15-18 year olds? They still have plenty of years left for their chance to shine at Worlds
I agree, those circumstance are more acceptable. But how often does that really happen?i think it truly depends on the make up of the team. If its mainly 16 - 18 year olds and only 1 12 year old then yeah a 12 year old doesn't belong. But if there are 3 12 yr olds, 4 13 yr olds, 4, 14 yr olds, 5 15 yr olds, 2 16 yr olds and 2 17 yr olds then yes a 12 year does belong.
If your 12 and an amazing gymnast should you be allowed to go to the olympics? Or if your a superstar soccer player, should you be able to make the world cup soccer team? No, because rules are set up to protect kids, and help them progress naturally. Just becuase you have the talent doesn't mean you need to show it off imeadiatly. I was on a senior team, and in my stunt group there was a 12 year old, 2 17 year olds, and an 18 year old. Thats not right, or fair for the older or younger kids. Kids should be with kids around their age. If one is going to middle school and one is going to college, does this really look right?
Maybe I'm not understanding this, but how can anyone on a youth team be eligible for a Worlds Sr 5 team? My CP was the oldest on her youth squad and her birthday was September 6th, so she turned 12 6 days after the cut-off. Because of that 6 day issue, she wasn't even eligible to be on a Sr 5 team. I would think the same would hold true for anyone on a youth team?
If there was a grace period then what's the point of a cut-off?I was told that the is a "grace period" for the aug 31st cutoff date. So if you turn 12 say on sept 10 you can still compete on a worlds team even though you missed the aug 31st cutoff. I dont know if this is true, but last year I know of someone who didnt turn 12 until after aug 31st and we were told she could be on Sr 5 (not an open 5) because of this "grace period" and she did compete at worlds. Has anyone else ever heard of this???

It probably happens a lot more often than there being only one 12 year old among a bunch of highschoolers. I don't think we've ever had more than about 6 girls who were too old for juniors on our Senior teams and we're now going into our 4th yearI agree, those circumstance are more acceptable.
