There will always be typos and mistakes from a lack of sleep, however it is really sad how bad the younger generation is at spelling and grammar. Text messaging and technology in general has sort of ruined it for them. I looked over a friend's resume and it was ridiculous. No wonder she didn't get the job that she applied for before I looked at it...

Oh honey, it is ridiculous.... I get resumes all of the time, and the vast majority are horrid. I just got this resume on Monday, and this one is pretty representative of the quality of the resumes I receive. Here are some gems from it, all verbatim:

"I some experience in working in a Dr Office for five months"
"Set up surgery up"
"Microsoft Office, word, spread sheet"
"Some medical Terminology"
"I have work experience working at ice cream shop four year"

I do actually feel bad for these people, but if they are going to be creating legal documents for us, as well as functioning with a significant amount of autonomy, I cannot even consider hiring them.

It's unfortunate I notice most of my mistakes after the fact... #sorrynotsosorry
There was a time when we could go back and edit our posts. I really miss that! I could fix any mistakes after I hit post.

I have a child with serious dyslexia which I am sure he at least partly inherited from me. My Mac Book changed my life but it is not fool proof. Please be kind. I know many of you must feel quite superior with your fabulous grammar and writing style but not everyone one is blessed with your natural ability, for some it is quite laborious. Have some empathy for a person whose writing takes considerable time and effort. I really try hard not to judge people and I guess that would include poor spellers. #justsayin

I think most of us are understanding of spelling and grammatical errors here as it is an informal setting, but it does get snarky sometimes. It all comes back to sensitivity. If you are going to post in a forum like Fierceboard, then you open yourself up to criticism about everything. This includes your opinions, avatar, gym, and writing, Also, I don't consider myself superior to anyone. In fact, I really despise that word. Writing well is a labor of love, and it doesn't come naturally for most people including myself. I am sorry that people have been critical of your son, but unfortunately human nature is to be judgmental, especially in a professional setting.

Just to clarify...Please realize my post was really not directed at anyone in particular. I just wanted to draw attention to the fact that for some people writing is challenging. Sometimes English is not their first language or sometimes it's a learning issue but we all need to be sensitive to that. Not everyone has had the same advantages or opportunities that many of us have had. Just a small reminder to be kind.

Does anyone remember this texting commercial from years ago? It was my all time favorite. This drives me crazy!

Alright, I have given numerous tutoring lessons in English (for non-native speakers) and I have yet to come across a they're/there/their mistake!
That is probably the reason why I don't understand this being so difficult for native speakers....

Even worse is I vs me.
Preposition = me
No preposition = I

For example: The neighbors made drinks for hubby and me.
She and I went to the store.

This. Oh my God this. I can't believe how many people think that "so-n-so and I" is the only correct thing. It makes me insane when I say something like "She gave the reports to Sarah and me" and someone says "Ha...it's 'Sarah and I!'" And I'm sorry but I always correct them right back with a quick English lesson about objects and subjects. :banghead:

The church that owns my school :mad::mad:
I don't even understand
food, clothing prayers?! what's a clothing prayer????
food, clothing, and prayers.

hahaha That's funny.

Although if you wanted to go by AP style it would be "food, clothing and prayers". No oxford comma. Although there is a huge debate on whether that comma should be there, journalistic writing leaves it out.

(end journalism major rant)

Oh I know, I always use the oxford comma. But even if they weren't going to use it, they're still missing the "and."

As my school's yearbook editor, we had to come up with an advertisement page for the church and we were FORCED to put that on the page. When we told them that it was incorrect they said they didn't care. -_-

We need a police badge smiley or something. Every time someone used terrible grammar multiple times, a member of the grammar police could just reply with the badge. It would be great for repeat offenders.
