What exactly is a layout?

It's a flip where the athlete holds a hollow body position instead of tucking or piking their legs over. Butt in tight. No arch. Arms by sides. Head neutral. Looking down their body at their perfectly pointed toes : )

I actually prefer their arms on top of their thighs more than directly by their sides. But either way if they perform it beautifully is fine with me!

I don't particularly care where the arms are as long as they are not too wide, even, and in front of their body. I hate when coaches allow an athlete to grab behind the legs. Hello that will never twist.

It is also why so many cheer tumbling layouts are piked over from vertical to landing. In pulling their legs over their head they pike when the pull.

I feel like a lot of cheer layouts are too close to tucks :(. This drives me nuts!!!! Cps former gymnastic coach would have killed her for that and it drives me batty watching it!

I've noticed that a lot of level 5 kids get their fulls, doubles, ect and then their layouts start to look really sloppy and bad. But yes, grabbing in a layout is horrible :( I've seen videos of whole teams that do it, I guess that's just how some gyms teach them I guess, it's either they all do them without grabbing behind or they all do.

You can not rush good technique. Just because you can do the skill does not mean you are doing it with proper technique. But when you are rushing to get skills to try out for a higher level, or when you are taught the only thing that matters is landing it technique is thrown out the window. Also just because you can throw a skill and show a skill does not mean you know how to teach a skill. Lastly a lot more kids are self taught on their trampolines at home. Lots of bad techniue picked up there as well.

For all good technique driven tumbling coaching everywhere, AMEN!
