I've had to stop a routine twice in the last 2 years. One was a serious injury, and the other turned out to not be serious. If a kid is down, and doesn't get up, or is visibly struggling to get up, I'm stopping that music. With the second stoppage, the EP gave us a 10 pt deduction (later rescinded) for causing a disruption to the schedule. You really don't want to know how we responded to that :D

Is it just me and my non-religious self or does "wearing blue" really do anything? I don't think that people understand that certain matters are out of our reach, *for example* wearing a pink shirt will save a life.

Yeah, it's just me.

It's not about "saving a life", it's about showing support and showing that you care.

Wait...ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of...the fact that you even had to fight it, whether it got taken back or not...I am floored right now.

JAMZ' Official Statement regarding the Anaheim Championship:​

"JAMZ knows the cheer world joins us in wishing a speedy recovery and well wishes to the athletes from last weekend’s competition. The incident has generated a question over the proper time to ‘stop’ a cheer routine.​

​

In this specific case, when the incident occurred, both the athletes’ coaches and event personnel were concerned for the athletes. The athletes who left the mat were immediately escorted to an are designated for medical attention. At this point neither the Coaches nor the Event Officials stopped the routine because the visible injuries were off the floor, athletes continued exceptional performance, and the safety of the remaining athletes did not seem to be in question. Once the remaining injury was discovered the routine was stopped immediately.​

We are dedicated to the safety and well-being of our athletes. We have contacted and are working with the USASF to create additional clear protocols as it relates to stopping a performance. We also hope these protocols can be put in place throughout the industry."​

I don't understand why if an athlete (or two) leave the mat in the middle of the routine why the routine would keep going. Like someone else said, I'm so afraid some teammates won't realize they're gone until they throw a flyer over in the pyramid and no one is there to catch. If someone is too hurt to continue, whether laying in the middle of the mat or off the mat completely, the routine needs to stop.

And the safety of the remaining athletes did not seem to be in question: this is what bothers me the most. They are level 5 athletes doing release moves and bases changing pyramids, yes they were at risk.

... hmmm, this doesn't add up to me.. I spotted the flyer bleeding from 36 rows away on the upper balcony... So did everyone around me.

Please be careful, everybody, before you suggest the coaches were negligent in this case. Aside from the fact that officials stop gameplay in sports, the coaches had a LOT to digest and internalize during any crisis. It's very easy to watch a video and speculate what should have happened and when, but things don't play out in real time the way they do on video and in our heads.

I think conversation about how to improve the system is awesome. But speculative assumptions about impure motive is so uncalled for.

The fact that coaches/ EP didnt realize there was an injury of that severity doesn't make me feel ANY better. It actually makes this a bigger problem.

There definitely needs to be no gray area when it comes to safety, these are kids who will have a life, long after cheer is over.

I have to add that when I told my daughter about this, she said "that's what we're always told...keep going no matter what" (no one imagines something like this happening).....this is wrong. Athletes need to trained on what to look for as well.

and when returning from an injury like this, there needs to be very strict rules as well.

Um wait? You don't have EMT at competitions?
We have EMT at EVERY competition. In warm up room and on the side of the competition stage. It's in country law that at every sports event EMT has to be there ( either it's football game or cheerleading competition)
USAF you have time to talk about NO high five after you hit the routine but you don't talk about having EMT at every competition. Oh you really disappointed me this time.
