As of now, USASF released a statement that they plan on going ahead with Worlds for now, but I would be very, very, very surprised if it stays that way. Considering some of the measures Disney has taken yesterday and today, they will likely be closed much longer than 2 weeks. Sources I have heard from within the company (higher ups) have said that they are currently preparing (not necessarily planning at this time) to be closed through April and even into May.
i would hope not, simply because whatever disney does, universal tends to follow and i doubt either will offer full paid leave for that long, and there goes me not affording bills, etc. Ive heard rumors that we could possibly be closed till mid april. Theres already been a lot of commotion on what employees are getting compensated for and what we arent, and its already ruffled quite a few feathers among employees (wont get into specifics) But some employees in the beginning were going to get screwed, while others were getting a better deal, maybe 5 updated emails later in the course of 24 hours they finally fixed most of the logistics of this whole shutdown.
i would imagine if things get worst and disney does a complete shutdown, usasf wouldnt have a choice but to cancel, but i know little about their business relationship.

personally i dont want things to be shut down longer then 2 maybe 3 weeks. People have bills to pay, and we probably arent making as much with paid leave compared to if we were all actually working.

You probably know some of these things since you're down there, but for others, Disney has ended the College Program and International College program for current students and sent all of them home. They were supposed to be there into May/June. These students make up a very large portion of the employees throughout the parks. They have also ended contracts with several long-time entertainment acts throughout the parks. I have a very hard time believing they would do these kinds of things if they expected to be back open in 2 or 3 weeks. They are giving reasons such as they don't want the students in close-quarters in the housing complexes and that they need to save the money they are losing for the entertainment people, but I would think that would have little impact in just 2 weeks.
I feel so bad for what you are going through, I can't imagine how much it sucks. I'm very thankful I have a job that will likely have very little, if any impact. And that I am in a position where even if it were to close for some reason, I would not feel the effects of not getting paid right now. It's just a sucky situation for so many people.

I understand your point of view completely. It sounds like your gym has gone a different direction than we have/will. I am just trying to give out a different perspective of why someone staying open isn't simply because of greed or with disregard for children's or society's safety. It is just more grey than that.
right. They haven't made the same decision to halt practice yet but I am sure circumstances will dictate what needs to be done next. 100%. Thank you for that perspective. The programs I've been associated with always seemed to do it for the passion and the business came after but I would never describe them as greedy.

oh yes, im aware of the college programs ending. While i completely understand the frustration of it all, for not only employees and visitors, it does make sense to shut down for a period of time. Its the thick of spring break right now, we definitely arent seeing the numbers we usually see around this time. But its nice to know the parks are trying to protect their employees. There are A LOT of old timers working through out universal and disney, so they would be at the highest risk. I think they are trying to slow the spread at least maybe within orlando, realistically them closing till the end of march makes it so that kids are done with spring break and back in school. The miami/broward area is getting hit hard by this currently, and they get a sh*t ton of tourists, so maybe orlando is trying to prevent what they are going through.

If it makes you feel any better, the same kinds of things are happening everywhere, not just touristy places like Orlando. Restaurants being forced to close to all dine in guests (take out only), bars being forced to close, other theme parks closing even local parks, everything, everywhere.

A small town next to us just closed all restaurants/bars for now....

I respect you enormously, I understand that many businesses both cheer and non cheer related will fail. I will pay my bill regardless if we never practice this month or next. But, when every establishment in my community outside of food and grocery is closed while terrible and horrible I can't justify to my friends, family or myself why my kids still have cheer practice.

I agree that these are hard decisions. But our states are begging us to stay home. I feel if they shut my states schools down - Cheer should be as well.
My specific gym keeps email us that we need to practice if we want to get bids at our next comps. And if we aren’t at practice this week we will have to sit out the rest of the year when things get rescheduled. I feel like that is a pretty hard line in the sand on where their priorities are.
And I understand a group of 18 kids at practice seems low risk but it’s not- my kids are likely to be carriers based on mine and my husbands careers. We will get sick and most likely be fine but what about the other kids they infect... this is why we are social distancing.

This is what happens when the governing body doesnt step up and makes the calls it needs to make. People arent going to make the best decision for the masses, theyre going to make the best decision for themselves. IMO, USASF needs to end the season. The longer the possibility of Worlds/Summit lingers, the more pressure gyms are going to feel to continue formal practices. End the comps and the practices end. Allow gyms the ability to hold optional small/controlled sessions (if they feel like thats a safe option in their area) or push out daily at home workout plans tailored to individual athletes/teams to keep the money flowing and kids doing something. But stop incentivising group practices with Worlds/Summit and allow gyms flexibility to serve their customers new needs without the stress of future bids and globes.

Right, right. I imagine we're headed towards a national shutdown, little by little as to not completely tank the economy or disrupt social systems to the point of chaos. We have to give people, businesses, and municipalites at the local and state levels time to figure stuff out and put contingency plans in place for the potential reality of a major shut down.

I think its the right thing to do even if its the hard thing to do. Unfortunately this is new territory for everyone everywhere and we're all doing the best we can to navigate some very difficult situations under short and dire timelines. We're all learning together. Its been an interesting few weeks to say the least. With how advanced and globalized our systems and socities are, its sobering to see that we are still quite fragile.

This is unacceptable to me (the emails.)

Our gym is currently closed through March 18th, but I’m expecting it to end up being longer, and have already asked the parents if they should cancel our comp at the end of April. I’m truly baffled that your gym is still thinking about getting bids and threatening to sit kids out if they don’t show up for practice this week, it doesn’t seem like this is the time for heavy handed threats.

Exactly. They seem to think we will be competing on 3/28 in a state that closed casinos today. I am just going to sit back and forget about cheer for the moment. I feel like everything will be canceled shortly so we have decided to not practice this week. And if we can’t compete when/if everything gets rescheduled I guess we will find a new gym- which I don’t want to do.
