All-Star For The Judges

Gymnastics has been around since ancient Greek times, and they STILL are frequently making new rules, guidelines and scoring systems for it. And thats what we will have to continue to do... the system will just keep evolving with the sport.

Amen. Any sport judged by humans will have it flaws. Gymnastics, Ice Skating, Competitive Dance, Comp Cheer, etc. And seriously, bless those who are willing to judge! Like referees, you will always be right when we win, wrong when we lose ... and we would not have the sport without you!

I think with the current rules, that there is very limited things you can do to really be considered an evolution. Even if you did perform something revolutionary, I dont think I would be enough to REALLY surprise and shake the scoring system. Level 5 rules, if you think about it, are extremely limited when comparing the rules to the tumbling to gymnastics, and the stunting to acrobatic gymnastics. Yes, in your gym, you might be able to perform something revolutionary, but with the current rules and safety guidelines... You would never be able to perform such stunts legally.

Wow! 100 million stunts? That's a lot of stunts. Too bad we only ever see about 4 of them.
Lol true about level 5, but I talking stunts in general.... Have you ever been to a acrobatic gymnastics meet? MY GOD those people do some CRAZY stunts and made me think about actually how FAR away we are from even touching that difficulty in Cheerleading.

The hand to hand stuff and the creative body positions in acro are mind blowing. I remember seeing acro for the first time at 2002 Nationals and thinking "well crap, everything we did in college cheer looks like bananas next to this!"

Let us say Worlds is only a 1 day competition. There are no prelims, just finals and you have to judge 80 teams. Do you think the winner would be accurate?

I think the winners would be accurate, but mid and low placements would likely be questioned. What have you thought of 1st day placements at Worlds so far?

Its truly amazing. The time those people must put into their flexibility, core muscles, and balance! Cheerleading doesnt even touch those skills.

And they do it all with out looking like they're exerting any effort at all. When they are in hands and they pop, the top person does a full twisting tuck and is caught in their feet again! Amazing!

Agreed Andre.
And this has a lot to do with the discussion we had this weekend about how many teams receive bids.

I think in the larger divisions teams get put into the right groupings, but not necessarily the right places. The top 10 will be the top 10, but placements dont really matter. The team that is the best stands out among your peers when they are all grouped correctly. Winning day 1 is like winning the NIT, it doesn't matter but stacks you up against everyone.

Actually, I think that is the brilliance of reverse order. It ensures the best teams are competing against the best teams to get the correct placement at the end. Maybe this is an unintended beneficial consequence, but that is why I figured Worlds and NCA did this?

Better way to say it. Winning prelims is like winning at half time. It gives you a good feeling, can give you momentum, but its how you play the second half that determines who wins.

Im not saying dont go for the new and innovative tumbling, Im saying go with the clean and a difficult tumbling..
It will beat out the "new and innovative" 9 out of ten times.
New and innovative has a tendency to be not executed well while its still "new"... It might score a 9.0 on difficulty, but thats no good when you get a .3 on execution.
Clean and difficult will score 8.5-8.7 and will get you a 1.0 on execution.... do you understand what Im saying?
In the particular situation you proposed:
Judges would score one of two ways:
Identical in difficulty, and would reward Team 1 with and extra .1 in performance or routine creativity, (due to there routine was more appealing because they didnt have little Billy standing in the middle of the floor)
Or
Judges would keep difficulty the same, and score team 2 less on performance or routine creativity (because they had little Billy standing in the middle making it awkard) :)

This does not include the obvious fact that both teams would have different execution scores.
That is how I think judging should go but this year a team that tried a bunch of stuff but busted scored higher because they had more difficult stunts eventhough we hit a clean routine that was in the high portion of the score sheet????

Are judges allowed to go back and forth to score sheets or do they turn them in before the next team comes out?
The company's for which I judge for are computer based. Once your validate your scores, there is no turning back.

i thought it was all about who paid the judges the most $$$
If it were about this, I would of quit a LONG time ago.
Most other Judges, like myself keep doing it because we love the sport. I know that sounds corny but its sometimes can be be the ONLY reason we keep judging. Ohhh if you only knew some of the things we have to go thru to keep a competition on schedule :)
