The only fat testing I am aware of if for determining body fat percentage but unless I am just confused reading some of these posts it may also be used for drug testing or something else. Am I just wrong?

"What flavor of cool-aid are you serving today, cult?

Not sure how? You weigh someone and then figure out body fat percentage via a couple methods. Drug use can only be determined via blood and hair I believe.

You're reading it wrong. Fat testing determines body fat percentage. Drug testing determines drug usage

I think the person that quoted my post meant that people turn to drug use as a means of weight loss in order to pass fat testing

I mentioned the fat testing in my post to illustrate the fact that they didn't bother to find out of we were killing ourselves with coke....but they did care if we packed on lbs....and had we not complained and gotten other people involved people would have been kicked off the cheer team or dance team for having a high body fat %.

I don't think body fat testing is necessary, however providing teams with a nutritionist to work with is. For someone like me body fat is irrelevant....I still don't eat healthy....I just naturally have low percentage of body fat. For other people it's vice versa.

Just make sure they're eating healthy foods, working out and can perform the tasks at hand

That's what I thought. Was just confusing the two.

You could, in theory, determine drug use from empirical data looking at body fat and weight loss and if it was really rapid.
Or gain if it was really rapid… eating disorders and bulking don't generate the same rapid weight loss/gains like those seen with drug use.

But who cares and who takes responsibility? Coaches? Administration? Gym owners? It seems to be an open secret that no one wants to handle. And if no one gets hurt, does it matter? (I'm not trying to be callous, simply wondering in the wider scheme of issues cheerleading is dealing with, where do priorities stack up against the hashtag topoftheworlds?)

Fat testing is not a bad thing, but it can easily be misused. Kids coming into college have very little idea how to manage themselves completely, and that includes eating. They have never had to manage their lives before and usually gain the freshman 15 because they have no idea how to moderate all these new ways to consume calories. The same thing can happen that instead of eating too much an athlete can try and take control and eat too little. We are not allowed to measure weight at my school and I think it is a disservice to our program. An athlete should come in and have expectations to stay within 5 pounds of their tryout weight. We do have a nutritionist on staff that is allowed to assist in this.

BTW most college sports played at a high level they measure and watch their weight. It isn't just cheer.
The fat testing is a horrible idea. My 14 year old daughter spent 2 months in a residential program for eating disorders and then 4 more months in a day program. I had a wake up call, most of these girls and boys didn't look like they would have an eating disorder and nearly all of them were in there because of it being sports related! One 12 year old thought it would help her be faster and so she was 100's of miles away in a residential program over Christmas with an eating tube. Being fit and of a healthy weight is one thing nut each person is an individual and they don't need to try to fit a mold of someone else. My 5'11 daughter was trying to weigh 110 like her friends who were 5'2".... Not happening.

It isn't a horrible idea if done right. Most sports in college (football, cross country, baseball, basketball, all of them) weigh their athletes and set forth for them goals that are specific to their body types. Yes someone could abuse it and try to get someone 5'11" to weigh 5'2", but if used responsibly it can help someone maintain and achieve the right athleticism for them.

My FP has just come home from his first semester at College (Summer II). He is playing football for his school and was given a goal of gaining 15 pounds. My first reaction was "Wouldn't it be nice if someone told me I needed to gain 15 pounds." But it made me pause because he already weighs right at 270. He is close to 6'4" and an offensive lineman but he could use those extra pounds on the line. I'm okay with it because I am fully aware of the strength and conditioning program they are using and believe me when I say it is very intense. His High School had a very good program as well. He has been participating in strength and conditioning since 7th grade. I have always told him that he would have to continue in a lifelong exercise program to maintain his health. As a Mother I worry about these athletes that are involved in structured physical fitness regimens as a part of participating in their preferred sport. I sincerely hope that their coaches and mentors are also instilling the importance of a lifelong commitment to physical fitness. For someone the size of my FP not continuing in a fitness routine after the football is over could make for some serious health issues.

As long as he keeps an eye on it, he should be fine. My cousin played football in college and seems to have done just fine transitioning out. Granted, he was a different position on the line (I think he was a WR, but he did play a variety of positions). But so far, he's maintaining healthy weights. He IS going into the police force, however, so that's an incentive to stay fitter.

i was speaking solely from a media point of view and the verbiage used. when they say investigating an overdose the outcome is rarely alcohol alone.

right, that's what i was elaborating on: the media/pop-culture/everyday view of alcohol and the way its spoken about. my comment wasn't meant to poke at you.

I know we have some young board members on here and I just wanted to suggest that we watch what we are saying in this thread as some things can be giving kids more info on drugs than they need to know. I'm really not trying to be a jerk here lol. I just read the whole thread and learned two things myself that could help me get away with using a specific drug etc. I am an adult who knows better but some kids don't see the parts of our conversation where we are saying how horrible it is. They read up until they find out how to get away with something and ignore the consequences of drug use. I'm truly just looking out for the young kids on here. I'm sure they know more than some of us do but I'd hate for even one to get any ideas from here. :p

@Senior5Allie how do you feel about kids across the country wearing red for a girl who overdosed? How many coaches are having conversations with kids about smart life choices? Or is she just a gorgeous cheerleader who died too young, let's wear red…

I think her death is awful and I am sad that nothing is likely to be done to change a culture that promotes/supports risk taking behaviour (which is why I started this thread).
