As an 18 year old entering college here's advice to my peers: never post on social media about drinking or drugs. And no matter how many times you've heard it people still do it way too often. If you're a cheerleader of any kind you're either representing your school or program even if it's not obvious on social media. Be smart!

At 2014 Europeans in Germany they did drug testing. They picked random athletes and tested them.
I don't know about results, but i know they did pull athletes (i think one male and one female) after awards.

But i'm also pretty sure it was the first time i heard of drug testing at a european/german competition. As far as i know, there are plans for more tests in the future.

I'm totally pro, and yes, if we could afford the costs of testing athletes on a regular basis (picking someone random every other week or month), i would. Not that i think my athletes are doing drugs. But i'm sure it would make them more aware before they decide to try because their friends are doing it.
And if testing would keep one kid away from trying drugs, it'd be worth it. Maybe not everyone agrees, but just my opinion as a coach and mother.

even the PGA drug tests. for what reason? i dont know. perhaps beta blockers, as is the case in archery and shooting.

as far as drug testing for "party" drugs in all star, i dont think it should be the job of gyms or some cheer governing body to look over the athletes in such a way. that should be the job of parents. a simple trip to walgreens or amazon will give you a variety of home drug tests to choose from.

as far as drug testing for performance enhancing drugs in all star, who would be in charge of doing that and when? all year long by the gym or strictly after competitions by some governing body?

the ncaa already drugs tests (however, i doubt they care much about anything that isnt football or basketball), but it wont really help if athelets get a heads up about the time and date. knew a guy who played for usc football and he claimed that the top players were always given a heads up. having top athletes, espcially in football and basketball, removed from the game hurts universities $bottom line$.

Just a thought this won't help with drug testing but what if coaches or ep's had breathalysed their athletes and if they were over a limit there would be a sanction it may stop people going out a night before a comp

@BowCat it's awesome that you started the conversation in this topic.

There are many programs, both all-star and college that allow/promote unhealthy behavior. From drugs to the eating disorders that people speak of.

I think if a coach knows or participates with athletes in ANY drug use they are commuting a crime, I also believe it is equally a crime to put any weight or body image requirements on athletes, it's a form of abuse. I think some may intend to ensure skills can be accomplished, but I have seen many actually say "you're too fat" "you can't eat certain foods" or "you have to stay under this certain weight."

Eventually the safety of the athletes in all types (not just skills rules) must be considered by the governing bodies and programs.

Can someone clarify something for me? From what I'm understanding it's illegal to have weight limits on cheer squads. Is that for both college, high school, and allstar? And is it national, or just by state?

Did the "pulling" of the athletes after awards affect the final placement of teams? I thought that the US was much more developed in cheer than other nations so it seems unusual that drug testing has begun overseas and not here.

I've never heard this. I don't think it's illegal, just side-eyed.

I am pretty sure it isn't illegal. What would be illegal about it?

Weight limits is probably a bad description. I would say weight and height standards.

"Collegiate appearance"

Hrmm, position standards? I would be hard pressed to make someone who didn't fit the traditional look of a cheerleader but could hold up a house on her own.

Sticky slope either way I guess.

Take away the single base factor and you could have a team with 'like' size and appearance that could interchange flyers and bases.

If that's from my statement, I didn't intend to imply it is currently illegal. I do feel it is a crime and a form of athlete abuse to force weight standards on athletes rather than skill standards. Especially making image statements at teen/young college athletes.

Same goes for ignoring/overlooking drug use
