Will be interesting to see if the NCAA does anything. And if all this really happened then I think they need to come down hard on UNC if the "Student" part of student-athlete is really important to them.

They didn't do a thing the last time. This has already been investigated once and uncovered and the NCAA said "there's nothing to it it's fine." I think a lawyer or someone several months later and the NCAA closed the book on it reopened the investigation and this is the result. Interestingly, it's essentially the same result they had the last time.

So I expect the NCAA will do nothing at all. However, I am an NC State alumni who is rather used to watching this go down. I'm still salty over Jimmy V.

I'm 99% sure the NCAA will do nothing.

But let's punish the current PENN STATE ATHLETES who had nothing to do with the monstrous actions of one, evil man many years ago. (yes I realize that has since been lifted, but they were banned from post season play and had scholarships cut for multiple seasons, and were on line for two more years) That, to me, was totally beyond their reach. That was a legal matter. The NCAA is not a government entity, they should not police that. Those responsible should be caught and thrown in jail. (as they were)

This is exactly the type of thing the NCAA should be concerned about. Yet here they sit, doing nothing.

This probably happens at a colleges to some extent. the problem is in CT at least, an athlete does not even need a 2.0 GPA in high school to do sports! So they go to college not really knowing what they should! That is ridiculously low! Grades should be more important.

In the "Schooled" documentary a learning specialist at UNC said she helped some athletes with their letters and sounds...

The NCAA "did nothing" before because UNC self-imposed sanctions including vacating seasons of play, cutting schlorships, paying fines etc. (I can't remember all of them). The Chancellor also resigned and approximately 10 people lost their jobs. If you feel like that wasn't enough then so be it but no one can say nothing was done.

Most anti-UNC people were hoping that this would hit the basketball program and Roy Williams. Unfortunately it has mainly focused on football. Ever taken a look at UNC's football record? Nothing to get excited about.

I agree with the previous poster as well. Any university or fan pointing their finger might want to be very careful their program isn't investigated. I suspect each have their own programs that are easier for athletes to get through. It doesn't make it right and it's a shame these kids aren't getting better educations but I'm afraid it happens A LOT!

Lastly, as my daughter said. We are admitted die hard Tar Heel fans and are embarrassed by this scandal. However it is also a small piece of this entire amazing university. My daughter hopes people avoid UNC for awhile leaving lots of room for her to get into her dream school in two years!

The problem is that these original self-imposed sanctions (from two years ago) does not fit the crime. UNC put themselves on two years of probation, loss of three scholarships in each of the next three years and vacating all wins in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. As well as a $50,000 fine.

First of all, these sanctions only effected the football team. We are now learning that this went beyond football players and included athletes in multiple sports.

Secondly, they vacated two years of wins. We're now learning that this was 18 years of academic fraud.

For comparison, Southern Cal and Georgia Tech had accusations that pale in comparison to this. The NCAA reduced Southern Cal's scholarships by 10 for three years. Georgia Tech was on four years probation. And then my obvious Penn State comparison earlier.

And trust me, I'm the first one to stick up for my school. I've seen the kind of treatment football players at big, winning SEC schools get. But I also believe in playing by the rules. I believe Todd Gurley should be suspended. He knew the rules and broke them, just like UNC did here. And if this kind of thing was happening at South Carolina, I would be calling for (and expecting) punishment and a overhaul of the athletic program.

I hear what your saying and expect much of this from outside UNC people. That's not meant as a slam just that we have some of these same discussions over dinner with the Duke side of my family). As you know this investigation has been going on for years. Part was athletic issues and part academic. Correct me if I'm wrong (again doing stuff from memory) but there wasn't any evidence that the athletic departments knew these things were happening. They said they knew AAS programs tended to be easier classes but had no idea they were no-show paper classes. I also remember there being no evidence that Athletics steered them towards those classes.

Now Academic Advising is a whole other story. They knew and encouraged athletes towards those classes and is why UNC is overhauling that department. You've got 10 people losing jobs and a Chancellor that resigned. That's a lot so far and UNC said there's more pending. Even the former advisor and whistle blower said she felt the culture is changing already and felt good about what was done so far.

Look i get it. If this were Duke I may be on the same bandwagon. But the bottomline is Academic Advising made some serious errors but the NCAA doesn't govern them. Now I do think NCAA will do more now regardless of the authority because there's so much hype to slam UNC right now.

Not surprised, happens more often then we think in college sports!

And then these kids come out of college after playing for 5 years and are no better off than when they went in. Minimal education, most do not make a professional team at any level, and have nothing.
My alma mater went Divison I basketball a few years back until there were a few severe physical altercations involving recruited players who would never have made the school had they not been imported from Serbia or some other Eastern European country and other students (one was left half-dead in a coma, fortunately he did recover), at which point the school decided to scrap their Div I program and go back to admitting students based first on their academics.

SMH... in the end, these kids lose. They're essentially being pimped out by the NCAA, and let's be honest, how many D1 athletes go pro? Very few. The rest graduate with a pitifully low amount of fresh knowledge in their heads. Even if you do go pro, if you're not a SERIOUS standout, a major injury can end your career.
