Real question: how do kids at large, well known programs and esp on well known level 5 teams that compete across the country every weekend even stay in school? My school only allows 12 excused absences per semester. I'm already at 6...I lose all my credits once I surpass 12...

Some are at online schools I'm sure.

I'm not a Worlds parent, but I'm guessing that if your child is at a school with strict attendance policies, it's probably all about LEAVING for NCA/Majors/etc. right after school on Friday, RETURNING that Sunday, and going to school Monday morning. Even if you got in from NCA/Majors at 2 AM.

We've had to do it for RARE big soccer weekends with my boy (leave school right at dismissal or a little early on Friday, return late Sunday and go to school.) I would imagine that Worlds team parents do what they have to do as well.

That's not healthy.

you got it!

In my defense as a parent (before someone calls CPS on me), I have only done it once (his only overnight/weekend tournament last season!) He's little so I don't know if we'd do it again.

It's far from ideal, but for a lot of kids in time-consuming weekend activities, that's how weekends are during the season.

My CPs will go to 2 comps with a 6 hour drive one way and 3 flight comps this season. They will miss 5 full days for cheer and were dismissed at noon 3 times. They don't miss for anything else unless they have a fever/vomiting etc. In fact today was senior skip day and my cp who is a senior was in school. If you plan wisely and don't miss days for unnecessary things it is doable.

She has a point, BUT, and this is a huge but...I got bored one day several months back and watched a lot of random videos on JTV. I don't even remember why I was up all night but one of the videos I clicked play on was her house tour. While there was a little house it was more a political message to the cheer community for what she wanted for the future and I remember her specifically saying that she doesn't want the sport to get to the point it's at and force her to tell her lvl 5 seniors athletes that this is the end...we have nothing new to teach you. She looked forward to the bigger and the better.

I'm not holding this statement against her; everyone has changes of heart and time changes opinions of certain things, but I'm interesting to see how this plays out in terms of what changed her heart. I'm sure it's been no small feat getting to this point.

The timing of this is due to parents had a chance to get back from NCA and look at the rest of the season. UCA....that really wasn't an issue because we can drive it and opt to stay at a budget hotel. Then we started looking at LA and more than half of the parents on our team was like "WUTTTTTTT????" Flights from our area have tripled in the last 2 weeks. Back to Back to Back to Back competitions all across the country is something we can't do every year. We will make it through this season but something has to give for us next season. She listened to what the parents saying. We work day to day for our children's happiness but at some point after years and years of travel you have to step back and say this is not working for us. SHE LISTENED to us parents and is doing what is best for her Teal family as a whole. Does that mean no more NCA??? I don't know, but she realizes that she has to KEEP her veterans in the sport along with bring NEW people into the gym and this is a giant step in that direction. It has nothing to do with timing except the fact the us parents just started looking at the next few competitons and had a reality check.

This doesn't have anything to do with stay to play. There are so many big competitions that we can travel to on the east coast. SOOO MANY! We can get to Jersey in a matter of hours (7-8) Maryland, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Indy, and Florida. All under a 10 hour drive. Some of those comps are stay to play, some are not.
When you pile 3-4 families in a big SUVs - road trips are cheaper and create more memories!
