What exactly is Stay to Play??

When you have to stay at the hotel the EP has contracts with. We don't have any on the west coast. But NCA Dallas is like that, I guess there are others too.

a lodging racket enforced by the shadowy cheer cartel elements.
Sort of and sort of not. Many large convention centers are owned/operated by or in close conjunction with the city itself. They are in great demand and often host 2-3 events at a time. Securing a reservation for the entire center for a whole weekend requires that your event prove it will worthwhile to the city and must usually be be deemed a 'citywide' event. To do that, the event must show that it brings in X amount of tourism and tourism dollars.
STP is a way of proving to the city that the event is bringing in this many people who are using this many rooms and therefore should be allowed to continue to rent the entire convention center. This sort of thing applies to many events not just cheer. They may not all use a STP type system but they must still deal with the issue if they want to have exclusive use of a facility for a whole weekend.

Suspicious in what way though? She's already announced her displeasure with NCA this season and said they probably wouldn't be back. That's not really hiding anything. The financial burden sounds like all the more reason to remove it from the schedule.

If they are unhappy with the results, why go back? I wouldn't return to a restaurant where I did not enjoy the food served to me. It's her gym and it's her decision. Gyms drop competitions all the time. This just happens to be a big one. I guess I'm just a little confused as to why people want to criticize for making a business decision or feel like she owes some kind of explanation (and then when an explanation is given basically claim it's not good enough)
She insinuated they would no longer do STP events which would be a big step for a gym owner and is making a huge statement to the industry, but when questioned no one from the gym seems to want to confirm that. But if the gym isn't doing events that require air travel, then NCA is the only event that would be off their schedule and that really isn't a huge money saver. I don't care what they do, but there is a huge difference in saying you won't play by the industry's rules anymore and not going to one competition.

"You are only responsible for being honest, not for someone else's reaction to your honesty."

School attendance can be best addressed internally. My CPs are well under half their school absences from last season (NCA was actually the first competition that required missed school for us with Indy and CHEERSPORT on holiday weekends) but the biggest impact is that our new gym doesn't practice at the venue the day/night before. That has saved us a lot of school attendance. That's what racked up a lot of days for us last year.

LOVE this!!!! When we are required to be at a comp the day before for "practice" it is usually by 4p...the school absences have become a HUGE thing in this house. Thank goodness NCA Monday was a snow day..

Honestly, it was one of the first questions we wanted to know when the schedule came out and I was so relieved to hear him say exactly what I think.

If you don't have it by then, you don't have it (YAY! bring it on). And he said he'd rather kids get into town, have a meal, relax and get some sleep.

I wanted to cry! THANK YOU.

Why can't they prove this in a more convenient manner? Thousands of visiting athletes, along with their coaches and parents are bound to bring in a lump sum for any town.

I understand all of this and you make some valid points, but it doesn't give them the right to raise their rates and add a "$20/athlete" charge to my hotel rate and I should be able to use points so long as I am listed under the organization when booking the hotel. I could have gotten my hotel directly for more than $100 less than I paid by being forced through the STP block. They can still get the information they need without screwing us over!

You can't convince me that Dallas, Atlanta, Indy and other cities don't already know the impact these competitions have on the city. I'm pretty sure that Comic Con next weekend in Indy isn't STP yet they managed to secure a large portion of the convention center. FFA is another huge one here and unless it's changed, the clubs simply have to register and turn in their rosters along with where they are staying.
I've heard that hotel prices go up due to supply and demand and just wanted to point out that that theory only works in a free market. STP is a cheerocracy...we don't get the chance to take our demand elsewhere.

I've said this probably 1000 times on here, but here goes 1001... They do NOT need STP to provide this information. Nor is it even an effective way to prove it. If that was the case, it would look like NCA was bringing more people to Dallas than the super bowl to its host city. There are plenty of ways to track the revenue an event brings to a city without stay to play. That's why things like the Final Four and the Super Bowl have no trouble booking venues.

Especially for an event like Cheersport or NCA, which are both events that have been held for a number of years. The convention centers could merely look at last year's receipts to know how many people attended.

I used to work for the economic development dept for our city (may years ago, pre Chicago) and exactly zero times did we need stay to play to determine the amount of revenue an event brought to our city - and we had some pretty specific numbers.

This is just the BS that the stay to play people have sold consumers to make them believe it's necessary.

OMG This. Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis.

I'm not saying there are no other ways to prove the revenue to the city. But Varsity has chosen this way to do it and has outsourced the responsibility to a third party travel agency rather than say hire someone internally to be responsible. I know some hotels were more than if people had booked on their own but some others were less.

Made me laugh to read from those saying that they "applaud" csp for taking a stand against stp, when it was never even mentioned by her!
I do believe it was about costs, and i believe the reason it was put on twitter and not just to inform her parents is that, maybe, there is enough parents considering the new gym in Charlotte (where most of the level 5 kids drive from) A gym who just announced they are starting their tryouts soon. I'm pretty sure she doesnt just randomly post on twitter, but has a well thought out reason for using that medium to inform her "parents"
I also noticed she seemed to get a pass for insulting the team that won NCA with the "where i come from a team has to hit to be a champion" I guess where she came from must have changed since her team won at worlds with a stunt fall. If eddie or orby would have tweeted that half the board would have burned down.
