school gets you a career, cheerleading does not.
you'll NEVER be paid to cheer.

While I agree with pursuing further education beyond high school I strongly disagree with both of your statements and I know a host of choreographers, coaches & industry leaders who were at one point or another just cheerleaders but like Nate said...had a little passion and tact.

When I say 'You'll never be paid to cheer,' I mean it exactly as I say it. You will never, in an cheer career be paid to be a cheerleader (unless you cheer on a pro sports team and even those girls will be the first to tell you how they're also expected to hold a full-time 'real person' job). I don't take coaching or choreographing in that statement (as then you are not JUST a cheerleader, you are a cheerleader AND a coach or choreographer. And the thing that's paying your bills ISN'T being a cheerleader, it's coaching or choreographing), and I believe I address them separately later. My mother has never played volleyball, but she's a great coach and her girls will be the first to tell you so. Taking a year off from school to cheer won't necessarily make you a better coach or choreographer. All the skill in the world doesn't mean you'll be able to effectively communicate it or lead a team well. And therefore giving up something that CAN help you get a job for something that isn't a guarantee is risky. Especially while trying to hold down a job to pay the bills. That was my point :D

.... I am not cutting out high school, I'm still going to high school, and I have a job where I am now... I'm saving up so I can take care of things when I get where I'm going unil I get a job where ever I end up:.. What I'm saying is college is too much money... I wan to get in a year or two of cheerig and then I will worry about school, all these judgments all of you are making I do not care about I'm not changicng my mind! My parent know what I'm doing and support me... That's all I need, not your comment(: thanks you so much

It's your decision, and i'm glad your parents are behind you on this. however, @kristenthegreat is 100% correct. you will not ever be paid to cheer, even though you can jobs in the cheerleading industry as a coach. I can actually relate to you 100%> I love cheerleading so much, last year I was totally going to pick my college based off what was closest to the gym I ended up choosing.

However, if school is first. Cheerleading isn't a career, most people in the cheerleading industry that are successful also have a good education. Look at any successful gym owner, they will have a degree. Also, if college is too much money for you, then moving across the country for all star cheerleading an even worse idea. If I couldn't afford college, I would be saving up money for college, not spending money on moving and paying for all star cheerleading which we all know is very expensive.

Once again, it's your life and it's great you have such a passion. I would just hate for you to ruin your future for two short years on a team.

I think many are making this into such a big deal. He clearly states that he wants to cheer for only two more years. By the time he starts college he would only be 20 years old. I don't see how that is ruining his future. Heck, he could even attend a community college and then transfer to a descent university (this would also save him a lot of $). I do believe that he should have a back up plan and major in something else in case the whole cheer career thing doesn't go according to his plans.

please, please, please re-think everything youre doing. I can GUARANTEE you in 10 years you are gonna be highly regretting everything that youre saying.

At least try and take some classes at a local community college so you have credits and some college under your belt! Im taking them now as a high school junior and i promise you they arent hard! They wont get in the way of cheer either. Cause when cheer is over, all you have is college and a job!

I'm not trying to lecture, I'm just sharing my experience. I obviously don't know everyone's individual situation, but I would say 9 times out of 10 if you decide to graduate and "take a break", you won't end up going back.

Maybe we should make our own thread about this putting off college to cheer topic. I was enjoying the Large Coed convo.

A few girls have traveled from Naples over to Miami over the years and it is ROUGH on them. Its a 2 hour drive there and 2 hrs back. They practice until late at night so girls would get home around 12 and be up at 5:30 for high school here. Also, they have extra weekend practices in competition season.

Also, what a lot of people forget is the geographics of Miami and Florida in general. Take Atlanta. It is in the middle of Georgia with suburbs surrounding it. Kids from an hour away in any direction can get to the gym. Miami is on the southeast coast. To the west its just the Everglades and to the south its the Florida Keys which isn't very populated. Miami is a big city but it doesn't have the areas around it like other big cities do. Just Fort Lauderdale to the north. We are the same way in Naples. We only pull from the immediate area because of geographics. There just isn't anyone living in the Everglades. And from Orlando where OA is to Miami is a good 4 hour drive. Tampa where Brandon is is longer - 5 hours?

I live in middle georgia and atlanta is an hour and a half north....plus atlanta traffic.

Oh my! What times do you start school down in Florida? Or do yall just take forever to get ready? I wake up 7:30, leave for school at 7:50 haha. Just wondering, I'm not trying to get the thread off track. (again:rolleyes:)

I'm kind of Debating on which team I would like to try out for 2012-2013...
It's clear as day that I would like to do large coed
I don't want to go to TopGun because from the last season I wasn't impressed. Idk how they are this year.. I want to go to California but they lost a few of the people that inspired me for that team.
No cheer athletics because haven't really seen them win anything yet.
Georgia I have NEVER been In love with
And I don't like the Location Of Ace..
Might end up choosing Cali!

You might want to think of cost of living when your choosing a gym. While you don't like the location of ACE, it's a lot less expensive to live in Birmingham, AL than to live in California. But I guess if money is no object and you could cheer anywhere. I to live in Manhattan or LA if money didn't matter! I would also visit these gyms and the program before just deciding by videos, world championships and outside observations. You may move to Idaho and hate the way team XYZ runs their practices and the values at that gym.
