What would have happened if they announced the wrong team for first place? Has it ever happened and did they take the jackets away or let them keep them?

This is EXACTLY what happened...they announced the wrong team as the first place winner...they actually won 2nd place. They said ABC Elite you are the National Champions...and they weren't. They handed them the jackets, medals trophies and banner, and in reality they got beaten by over 20 pts. UCA let them keep the jackets because they had enough for the real winning team, but they took back the medals, trophy and banner.

YUK! How terrible for ALL involved. These are kids and they are not going to understand how this mistake could happen heck, i can't understand how that mistake can happen.

Yes, they are having a big banquet to celebrate, but they will never get that moment of hearing and the 2012 National Champions are....which is soo sad. Even the video that all of the parents bought will have them announcing the other team's name.
That stinks.

Same with our team for sr coed 4 at WSF. All they had were tiny and huge sizes, and most of our girls are AS/AM. Luckily they kept their promise and sent them to us, unlike some competitions who didn't (who already has a bad rep for many more things than that).

i feel like these things are just a trend at big nationals; so much to keep up with and mistakes are made... not that it is okay in any way. if they are going to put on an event of that size then they need to take measures to ensure everything runs smoothly and that things like this do not occur. i remember at UCA nationals in 2010 bids had been awarded and one team Brandon Senior White if i remember correctly was not awarded a bid to worlds. instead the bid was given to another team. yet senior white had been the highest scoring team of the event?? but rather than taking the bid from the other team they UCA asked if they would be allowed to award an additional bid to correct the mistake that had been made. and i believe they did so publicly. team a got to keep the bid they received and team b ended up getting what they earned.
which also reminds me of last year when we got our " team uca" worlds shirts. it got to our program and the wrong teams name was there. not as big a deal, but still annoying. ioc5 versus a restricted division. how do you make that kind of mistake?? but we had them fixed on our own. anyway fact of the matter is with events as large as these i feel like there should be plenty of people there doing their jobs to make sure nothing like this happens. there is no excuse. but when these things do happen they should be handled in a way that does not cause tension. like that bid situation. i do understand thought that these things are a lot to handle though and commend them for even trying. but...idk......try harder. as much as we pay to register for these 2-day bid awarding nationals... these things shouldn't be an issue.

We were at a nationals a few weeks ago where there were 12 teams in the mini 1 division. I'd been scoring teams myself and had an idea where they should fall (and generally impressed myself because I got them pretty much right) so imagine my surprise when they get to that division and the announcer says right off the bat, "your national champs are" and gives the name of the team I had in 12th! They didn't so 12, 11, 10 etc etc. He figured out his issue (after all these little mini 1's who clearly hadn't won anything all year are jumping around on stage) and fixed his error but how terrible to have to say...um, wait a minute....in 12th place is .... and call the same team's name. He was really apologetic but I felt really bad for those little ones. They didn't finish first, they finished last.

a couple weeks ago at a competition my former team went to, they were announced as coming in second to a very prestigious team that they would have loved to have beaten. when they received their score sheets and saw the other teams score, they found that not only were they scored incorrectly, they had actually beat the other team. but it was the competition company's policy to not retract original placements, even if it means the team went home with the shirts, the banner, the trophies that the other team truly deserved. i understand not wanting to hurt kid's feelings, but unfortunately, that's just life, and there are going to be disappointments and upsets. a team should not be rewarded for something they do not deserve just so no one's feelings are hurt.

Something similar happened last year, though fortunately not in terms of the winner. A team was called 10 th out of 12 teams. We were stunned because we thought they were great, we were right. We heard later they actually placed second, some kind of judging error. The results for last year on the website show them tied for second and the video was doctored with a new VoiceOver announcing them in second place and they spliced the video so their team received it right before the winner was announced. Still doesn't give them the competition recognition they deserved though. (they came back this year and got that jacket - beat cp's team by .5 )

I never get all that upset about judging or scoring mistakes - people are human, and as a soccer referee I can certainly look back on calls I made (or didn't make) that in hindsight I messed up on.

It really does stink for the kids affected, but I also rarely think it's anything more than people doing their best and making a mistake.

EDIT: I will say that the "jacket" thing, though, is a bigger deal. I know from working a local competition that we always had extra medals, trophies, etc. just in case these situations occurred.

King of the Jungle? Yeah, that was pretty sad... though the announcer was very apologetic as you noted. I think his explaination was that the list was 2 pages for that division and he only saw the one name on the page he was looking at and mistakenly thought they were the 1st place? Felt bad for those kids.

For smaller competitions - and in your case as a local sports referee - a margin of error may (and I emphasize the "may") be somewhat acceptable, because they generally have less experienced staff. But for a larger competition making a gadjillion dollars and running these events for years, hire experienced and qualified staff. Ship them in if you have to. No excuses. They owe it to their customers.

Didn't happen at NCA, but it happened to my school's JV team at UCA qualifier. Our team took 2nd to a team that was basically a mess. JV coach went and talked to judges or whoever. Then some official went over and took their trophy away and gave them the second place.
I think that it's extremely unprofessional that a company makes a mistake like that. At a local comp I could maybe understand, but not somewhere as prestigious as NCA.

That would never happen at your competition. :-)
