All-Star New York Moves To Classify Cheer As A Sport

Doesn't this make every high school team not able to compete at any competitons like Uca and nca ?

As far as I know, in CT it's considered a sport and they're still allowed to compete at NCA/UCA. Season runs through football to Feb. Technically you can't start practicing until 2 weeks before school, but I've seen people get around that by hosting 'camps' and doing other informal practices/clinics. Hasn't been a problem for us as far as I know.

What states classify cheer as a sport?

The state of GA classifies it as a sport AFAIK and it has not hurt cheer here (see current World Large Senior Champs).

I have a question (or two about GA cheer). HS teams are not allowed to compete at UCA or NCA nationals, correct? What if they didn't take part in any Georgia HS cheer competitions (I know state is a hugeee deal in GA), would they be allowed to compete at a nationals then?

Since the high schools are under GHSA if they want any part (the other sports) to be under it they all have to be under it. Honestly state high school in GA is great (minus the scoring). It has a defined season, doesnt interfere much with allstar because it ends in November and allstar for GA picks up in December, and the high schools use lay coaches from the local gym.

I know it is hard to make a blanket statement but I feel like if all states ran like GA (except for scoring) it would encourage more allstar and help gyms out as well.

It's a sport in SC and governed under the high school league. And because of this SC teams are not allowed to compete at UCA/NCA/anywhere out of state.

I would think for high schools that do go to NCA UCA they would have less interest in allstars.

Texas as a whole should be ignored. That state is cheer crazy and NCA is in house.

Probably. Of course it's a huge drawback to not be able to compete in national competitions but it is nice to have the high school competition season wrapped up completely before allstar season kicks in to full gear. The state championship is in mid-November so it allows most cheerleaders to do both if they want.

Cheer in Maryland is considered a sport. Teams aren't allowed to travel out of state for competition, so no UCA/NCA. Competitions aren't as well organized as GA but are decent. Everyone participates in Counties (you compete within your county/district). Top 2 Varsity teams go to Regionals. Top 2 Varsity teams from Regionals go to States. Not all counties participate though. Some only have one or two high schools and don't have a County competition. Those schools usually compete at Invitationals and all star competitions.

ETA: There are two seasons that align with football and basketball. The County/Regional/State competitions happen for both seasons. It's a pretty common practice for all stars to cheer for HS in the fall and not the winter.

I would love to watch a NCA/UCA high school national competition where every state was eligible.

There are so many amazing UCA teams from NY. (and maybe NCA too? I don't really keep up with NCA HS) It would be a shame for them to become ineligible. Especially as a result of trying to legitimize the activity as a "sport".

I wonder if the private schools will be under this rule as well? I hope not... a former teammate of mine coaches in Long Island and those girls KILL at UCA.
