All-Star New York Moves To Classify Cheer As A Sport

Yeah, space in NYC is wicked expensive, so I'm hardly surprised we haven't had a gym anywhere in the 4 boroughs..SI is a whole different (and yet similar) animal.

There's actually 2 in Brooklyn. Aviator (I don't think it still operates though) and Brooklyn Cheerleading and Sports. Brooklyn Cheer and Sports is actually doing quite well - their dance team got a bid to dance worlds this year and their cheer teams have a few national championship titles up their sleeve.... I'm thinking of cheering there instead of driving to NJ to attend CJA.

Per someone from NewRo yesterday. Details and restrictions aren't finalized. Nationals isn't out yet, but it could be and they aren't happy about it.

Typically no. If it is it is a school specific rule. Usually because the school doesn't want to deal with the hassle of fundraisers. The school I'm at lets us fundraise as much as we want, and we can pretty much do whatever we want. The one down the road limits everyone to 2 a year, and there is another one that just flat out doesn't do them. For the most part everyone is like the school I'm out and allows it.
That's what I thought, thanks!

Nooo, nationals can't be out. I think I'll cry if they take that away from them.

It might actual make things very interesting for all-star gyms if HS teams cannot go to Nationals. We could actually start our seasons quite a bit earlier if this is what happens.

Makes me sad, UCA Nationals was always the highlight of my season. So many great memories.

I think it's a greater good thing. Break a few eggs to make an omelette deal

Why can't they compete at nationals if they're a sport? Is it a NY thing that sports can't compete nationally?

same reason Georgia doesn't. if you're a sport, you can only compete in sanctioned sporting events (i.e. counties, regionals, states)

That's a state rule right? Our basketball team plays out of state all the time, sometimes pretty far (they've won state 3 times and are ranked something like 6th in the nation so when playing here it's same old same old).

NCA and UCA events aren't sports, sporting events, or sanctioned.

Lets say that high school cheerleading becomes a sport in all states. What would have to be done to keep UCA & NCA nationals around? Or would there be no hope for it to continue?

Assuming They would have to follows rules set forth by the state in which they are held and get the blessing of that states governing body.

I would say, honestly, those would go away. I don't want them to go away, but that would be an unfortunate side effect of being a sport.
