All-Star New York Moves To Classify Cheer As A Sport

Its really hard to have a gym in the areas surrounding NYC also. I love that Long Island gyms are growing and thriving, but it isn't that way in other areas close to the city. I have a gym in Westchester (about 45 min from NYC), and its really tough. Leases are through the roof, property taxes are crazy, and a lot of landlords don't understand All Stars, so they won't even let you look at the building because they think you will sue them with the first kid who gets hurt. Not to mention that All Stars isn't crazy popular in this area- although it is growing- so to be able to have the number of kids to support the crazy prices makes it almost impossible to be on your own. I could go on and on, but I am interested to see what this change will bring.

Yeah, space in NYC is wicked expensive, so I'm hardly surprised we haven't had a gym anywhere in the 4 boroughs..SI is a whole different (and yet similar) animal.
I also think part of it is that cheer is just not a popular sport in the NYC area. They do not have the demand for it. If the numbers of kids wanting a gym was there, then someone would find a way to open a one and make money off of it.

Sad that we actually have to pass legislation to force schools to buy use safety equipment and good coaches, but then we get a whole bunch of limitations, like no fundraising (my least favorite).

Is no fundraising really a rule? High school cheer is a sport in VA and we did fundraising all the time, but that was like 6+ years ago so things could have changed.

We did that one once many years ago. It was small but great to compete so close to home.

yeah i think the last time i went was like 2000/2001? (wow, i am old. some worlds athletes weren't even born yet :eek:) i just always loved the venue.. manhattan theatre, i think was it's name? with the cool opera seating and stuff. i guess there really isn't the cheer population up there to sustain that comp, but for some reason it was always my favorite.

Yeah, at some schools. Thankfully it wasn't at mine.

Yes that was it. I think cp competed there maybe in 2006 or 2007. It was an old theatre, I remember going up to the balcony and watching them from there.

Some interesting discussion on FNC's "Outnumbered" yesterday and today.

@King

Thanks! Very interesting chat. What I found most interesting is everyone seemed to be in agreement that certain types of cheerleading is definitely a sport. As of a few years ago I don't think the conversation would ever have had every person say at least one type of cheer is a sport. Progress?

I find it hilarious that there's a surfing population in NYC, but no allstar/cheer population.

For a city that has something like Bhutanese cuisine (at 2am), it's rather perplexing lol.

Per someone from NewRo yesterday. Details and restrictions aren't finalized. Nationals isn't out yet, but it could be and they aren't happy about it.

Typically no. If it is it is a school specific rule. Usually because the school doesn't want to deal with the hassle of fundraisers. The school I'm at lets us fundraise as much as we want, and we can pretty much do whatever we want. The one down the road limits everyone to 2 a year, and there is another one that just flat out doesn't do them. For the most part everyone is like the school I'm out and allows it.
