Ask her if she can see the flickering on the computer. I was in like 7th grade when I got a *N Sync video for Christmas and part of it had them on a computer---so video camera on computer and you can see the lights streaming. I had no idea because the average human eye processes what they see so quickly that they don't see any different. My youngest can see that streaming and after about 30 minutes on a computer she gets a headache. She can use a smaller sized Kindle on the dimmest setting and it not bother her as much, but the average laptop has the same issue.

I'll have to do that! I hadn't thought about that before.

I haven't heard of this happening in our area, but I certainly hope not. My youngest can see the lights flickering on screens and while she is a very smart child, I won't let her take any form of computerized test let alone have to use a textbook on a computer.

Besides standardized testing, all state tests in VA have been online since I was in middle school (09?) The only test that is on paper is the written portion of the State test that you take every other year.

We have an option for a paper test with the right paperwork, otherwise they have a signed letter on hand denying them the right to test her on a computer. She also knows not to allow it, so if they ask her to take a test on the computer she'll say no (hasn't been an issue yet). I won't allow anything that can be used against her to happen on a computer.

I would have struggled having to use a computer for everything. My sister has severe dyslexia and she has (I honestly have no idea why, not super well versed in dyslexia) a lot of trouble reading her textbooks on a computer screen. Fortunately she had her 504 plan adjusted and was one of few students given a set of actual textbooks to keep at home in addition to being permitted to take paper tests as well.

I am dyslexic and don't like doing lots of reading on the computer because I dine it hard to focus on the words due to glare. I like it matte and I find it easier to follow using my finger or using a high lighter to mark where I am.
Using word is ok as I can make the text and use the highlight tool but really not a fan of e text books if on laptop can just about deal on I pad with a kindle app

^^^^Question for those of you who are in a "limo to Kindergarten graduation" district:

Are these the same schools that have kids wearing formal prom style dresses for 8th grade promotion? I've heard of that. They also have middle school homecoming court. Really.
I wouldn't say we're a limo kindergarten area... at least not to my knowledge. Formal 8th grade dance / middle school homecoming & coming home however is normal. I guess I assumed it was normal everywhere.

Our middle school "informalized" the 8th grade dance a few years ago. Girls cannot wear strapless dresses, pencil skirts or heels. Boys wear khakis and a golf type collar shirt. Kids cannot arrive/depart in vehicles other than cars. Pre- and post-dance parties exist but are highly discouraged, especially the pre-parties. While the girls were never wearing prom-like dresses to this as I have definitely seen in other nearby school districts (more similar to what my oldest wore to her junior banquet in 11th grade), some of their outfits bordered on inappropriate for what the school wanted (and for their age imho) so they decided to make a dress code. I am not a fan of dress codes but this was actually welcomed and made it much easier on the parents.

Yeah where I'm from elementary school is up to 5th grade, and you get a promotion from 5th to 6th grade. Then middle school is 6-8th with promotion from 8th to 9th. Our formal was right before promotion, so it was like prom but styled like a HS HC.

This talk about crazy moms and school districts is so funny to me. County has A LOT of $$, being in one of the top ten richest counties in the country. Like every freshman gets a Macbook air. Not to mention grant money and booster money is used for a lot of the freebies. We have a school alumni foundation that gives over a million dollars worth of scholarship money, donated from former students, staff and community members. Grad is at Constitution Hall for every school in the county and students have to ride the bus there. The only thing that is fundraised are HC and prom. The SGA raises money for prom from freshman year to senior year, so the quality of your prom is based on your student gov. The more money you raise the more lavish senior year can be. We had so much $$ that our prom was in a 4-star hotel, and basically free. So while parents are super crazy, its not so much in the realm of school activities but in life in general.

I find it semi infuriating that your school gets grants that go towards "freebies" when there are thousands of schools across the country that don't have enough money for entire classroom copies of textbooks. Hahaha wtf ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Don't mind me. Lately at work, I've been listening to a lot of things about the inequality throughout public schools across the country and it gets me heated. Education is literally the most important thing you can receive.)

I definitely agree with @Eyes On The Prize, it is dreadful when teachers are expected and are given poor evaluations, in some cases, if we do not personally finance the extra resources our students need to learn the curriculum... I spend a lot of my own money buying copy papers, pencils, etc...so I can print textbooks for my students and ink for my printer (at $75 per cartridge)...Being a teacher in an urban area takes a lot of sacrifice of time and personal money...

Our town hosts an '8th grade formal' for all 8th graders at the end of the year at the high school gym. There is no homecoming court, though. And the dresses were not like ball gown formal.

Let me state my HS is one of the more culturally diverse in the area and a lot of the grant money goes towards funding programs for my minority students: college visits, pizza at the minority student meetings. I don't know where all the money goes but the money given to the school for that program is vital. Many students would never visit college campuses, or get the instruction needed without it. I know all students take AP testing free which is huge.

Let it be known we aren't just throwing money at everything. We were the last school in the district to get remodeled, and out the entire county, we have the highest number of kids who need the financial assistance. We just happen to live in a rich county.

Curious, is your school being desegregated or is it a magnet school?

Have you listened to the "This American Life" podcasts on this? They talked a lot about segregation/integration. They were super interesting.

That's exactly where I've been listening to them. There's so many about schools and education in general.

Feel free to PM me other titles! I just started listening to the podcasts on my commute to/from work and I can't get enough of them. They're really eye opening!

Will do! Podcasts and nonfiction audio books are all I listen to at work (I can really only listen to the Hamilton soundtrack so many times a day :P ) I've been going through all the archives so I've listened to quite a bit. I haven't come across one I haven't liked yet, but some are more entertaining than others. The school ones boggle my mind and make me so mad, especially the two part desegregation one.
