**well isn't that just special**
Picking out supplies is the best part of going back to school!
Sad to read this on several fronts. My non-CP is in the middle of her sophomore year at a top university going into elementary education and truly has a calling for it. I really hope she can find it a rewarding career. As an elementary teacher in a title 1 school, we are often seen as babysitters to the parents. They could care less what their child learns. They could care less that our job depends on their child's test scores. I feel so terrible for these students but at the same time I just don't understand why my job is tied to these students when they come to school saying "my momma doesn't care if I make bad grades so why should I try?" *seriosuly had a kid a few weeks ago tell me that* You can teach that kid up and down, you can give them as much love as possible, but that isn't gonna make them try when it comes to a test my job depends on and now I'm labeled as "ineffective." Our education system is really messed up. They kids are so sick of the tests, there is no fun in education anymore which makes it all the more reason for the kids not to try as stated above. Give them something fun and engaging and I guarantee they will learn whether they realize it or not. But instead we are sitting them in front of a computer 30% of the time testing. If I would have known that when I went to college, I most likely wouldn't have become a teacher.

Doesn't count when you take an Xmas photo with Cheer Son.
It is possible to find the rewarding positions. I have 2 friends totally enthralled in what they do and find ways to keep it fun and interesting for the kids. Another option for your daughter is some corporations hire teachers to do company training. Could be an option.Sad to read this on several fronts. Thank you to all those teachers out there. I know it is a thankless job in many ways

I come from a family of teachers - both parents, two aunts and an uncle, plus my brother, sister-in-law and my other brother-in-law. The most important thing they've all said is having a principal and administrators who support their staff, because yes it can be a very thankless job. Please tell her to keep that in mind when she starts looking for jobs.Sad to read this on several fronts. Hey, that was our first selfie. Me fangirling over Mama.Guilty.
But, in my own defense, I've done it as a bit of a joke on Little. Like, randomly posting pics on social media with her fave Cheerlebrity Du Jour with a caption like "Random Fan Pic, no idea who this is, but he/she was super sweet to want a pic with Mama"
@cheermuse, my last school district went back to the k-8 school model and it seems to be working... What this school district realized the middle school model (6-8) did not work because these students needed the younger grades (k-3) to make them feel like role models. I must admit, I noticed the behaviors of the middle school students improved by being around younger students. I also think, it cuts down on adjustments issues in the middle schoolers too. Jmo, When students go to 1 school for 9 years, it is a sense that they belong and it helps to establish family or community connections... I also noticed, teacher turnover stopped too.
I hope to god when I get out of my district I can experience this too. My district is very "shut up and get in line or be fired"I just want to say 1 thing before I return this forum back to Crazy Cheer Mom-- Many of us teacher who have been doing it for awhile have experienced plenty of good things in this profession too, especially during Christmas season... I received plenty of cards and presents from my students- I collected my 13th mug (haha), so I thank those thoughtful parents for their kindness... So with every job, you have some bad and good aspects, but I must admit teaching is a rewarding profession because we personally have a stake in the future and will always be needed.
I must admit, I would have said the same thing, but 8 years ago I taught a group of juvenile delinquent 8th graders whom I would not have trusted to walk my poodle... But we decided to assign these 8th graders to be big siblings to the Kindergarten class and they turned out to be the best role models, they read and helped the Kindergartens with their lessons... Furthermore, the Kindergarten class had a big affect on our 8th graders too, these 8th graders were mindful of their little siblings and began behaving better too, these little kids were so excited to see their big siblings and made the 8th graders feel important...I just finished 8th grade and I know some of the people in my class would not have been appropriate around first graders...
I think it is wonderful that these kids made such connections and then were able to take those experiences and relate them to their everyday lives. The biggest problem I see though with a K-8 school is the buses and having such a wide age range of kids in basically an uncontrolled environment. Our schools are K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12, and I always appreciated not having significantly older kids on the bus when my kids were younger.I must admit, I would have said the same thing, but 8 years ago I taught a group of juvenile delinquent 8th graders whom I would not have trusted to walk my poodle... Which I believe is sorely missing in the 6-8th or middle school environment...
