I agree. I wish that high schools offered a Life Skills course that covered basic "adulting" things. I know quite a few people who got to college and had life smack them in the face. There needs to be a class that will cover things like
how to open a savings account/ checking account
how to write a check
paying bills and the consequences of not paying
applying for loans
finding an apartment
budgeting
doing taxes

I would have gladly traded Health class for a course like this.

Honestly half the kids in my class may graduate without knowing how to pay bills, but you can bet everyone will know the Pythagorean theorem

I think there are some things that are good to teach high school kids like writing a check and that investing money when you're young is better than investing when you're older, but there are some things that I don't think the common high school student will fully understand until they are in the situation. Like why you should always pay your credit card off in full every month and not just the minimum, how your student loans work, how to budget for a household, etc. They have nothing to apply it to in real life. I took an economics course in high school and none of the kids in my class truly understood what it all meant, but we knew what we needed to pass the test. I think if I took the same class now, I'd be able to actually understand it and could apply it to my life.

Id love to see more things like cooking classes and nutrition classes being a requirement to graduate nation wide. I think health classes are equally important - physical health and mental health.

I think we should let kids know what resources are available to them when they want to know more about "adult" things and aren't in school. Community centers or community education programs hold informational classes, either free or for a small fee, to teach people about those adult things like retirement, loans, credit card debt, finance, etc. But I don't think many people know about them. Just because you're out of school doesn't mean you don't have classes like these available to you. Most times you do but you don't know about them.

My high school didn't touch on any life skills outside of not to be sexually active. That was it.

Tbh, I do remember the students not on the college prep track in those life skills classes... I guess, the college prep students could not fit in those practical life skills courses between AP, Honors and/or dual credit courses... When I was in school 30 years ago, I remembered going to school the regular 8am to 3pm, but I took college classes 2x a week in the evenings (5pm to 7pm) and a few times took a class on Saturday in my Senior year... I do not think colleges allow underage students or hs students to takes classes during the early mornings and the colleges I attended only allowed us to be on campus until 7pm...
However, I was still able to play 1 sport (track), but was not allow to do all these other activities I hear people said they were able to do and my parents forbid me from ever working during my hs days and college days... I guess, times have really changed in regards to what young people are allowed and able to do now...

I'm in 9th grade. is it bad they didn't teach us how to pay bills in this grade or is it to early?

You should talk to your parents.

"Don't have sex, because you will get pregnant and die!"

As bad as that was, we had a peer group come in to talk about their experiences but they all centered on the 'born again' movement---which is all fine and well, and I'm all for religious freedom but it kinda falls on deaf ears to the Atheist in the room.

I was taught in year 9 which is 8 th grade that having underage sex is not the best idea but to wait until you are in a stable relationship. We then got told about effective birth control and what to do if you get pregnant as teenage pregnancy was high in my area. I was part of a religion until I was 15 but have always had the attitude to wait until in a stable relationship.

ETA I like that our talk was not based on religion and gave different perspectives

In our district, they have adopted abstinence only education so it's 'no sex period,' and absolutely NO talk about birth control. They cover STDs but it's more of a brush over.

I've know about exsistance of birth control through school since I was 10. Underage teens are allowed to be on pill without parental consent and the philosophy is that we might not be able to stop it but let's give the kids all the facts and prevent teens from getting pregnant and making even tougher choices

Giving teens choices seems like common sense, but unfortunately, it doesn't always translate where I'm at.
