Prelims are 5 up 4 scores count. Finals are 3 up 3 count (each score counts toward the total score, no averaging) The only difference at this olympics is prelims because there are only 5 members per team, so everyone competes, unless you have specialists that don't compete on an event, then all 4 scores count.

So can a team decide to only compete 4 in prelims and just run the risk of one of those scores screwing up? Or do they have to compete 5 unless one athlete does not compete certain events?

I'm guessing only 4 scores count and you can use either 4 or 5 (which is why they decreased the number- so more teams could feel competitive with smaller numbers).. BUT having that extra wiggle room is why you want more all-arounders and less specialists. I think if ASac could have shown a strong floor routine, it might have elevated her chances..

I think A Sac would have almost guaranteed her spot with a strong floor routine, she'd be more reliable on beam and floor than Maroney if it came down to needing that person.

Okayy after a long cruise and missing all of this, I'm finally catching up (thanks comcast ondemand for having most vids). Most people have said my thoughts, but I just have a few tidbits I need to add...

1) LOVED ASac's leo day 1. Terribly depressed she's not at least an alternate, as she's my favorite gymnast of this era, but I'll get over it.

2) I'm not the biggest Nastia fan, but man that was depressing, and the crowd reaction was so moving.

3) Kyla has grown on me, a lot. I think at Visa's & Trials she definitely stepped up her confidence game. She seemed like she was more ready to be an Olympian, which is something I think had been missing.

4) #TEAMGABBY all the way. I've been very, very impressed with her, and I hope she can pull off an AA medal (or even a title!) in London. Jordyn and Gabby remind me of Nastia/Shawn battling in 08.

5) Everyone talking about Mag7 made me sad. Favorite. Ever.

6) I don't think the announcers stressed enough that bars were USA's weakness. -____- My word it seemed like every single time someone was on they had to point that out.

7) Cried watching the video of the team selection. Amazing moment for those girls.

So that was a bit more than a few tidbits, but I'm just really excited. 3 weeks needs to go by quicker!!

In the team FINAL this olympic year (it's changed over time), 3 gymnasts perform, and all 3 scores count (I believe they're either averaged or totaled, not sure which). I don't believe we will know who is competing where yet, although a few are pretty obvious (Gabby and Kyla are def on bars, Jordyn and Maroney are deff on vault, etc). For Qualifications, I believe 4 compete and 3 scores count. Qualifications are also how you get into event finals..

Thank you! I got two tickets for seats within a suite at the women's team finals..SO excited! Watch out for me in my team USA shirt on television!

I'm getting more and more worried for Team USA. Two Romanian gymnasts have upped their vaults to have starting value of 6.5 and Komova got her amanar back, which makes her a super strong contender for AA. I also wouldn't be surprised if Mustafina performed an amanar at the games. Team USA's main advantage isn't even really an advantage anymore...

Is it sad that it took me awhile the figure out that AA stood for all around? Lol.

Does anyone know how the team finals work at the olympics (I'm not 100% on the process) has it been finalised as to which events team USA gymnasts will be competing on? or will each gymnast perform on every event and the scores added up? I ask as I may be going to watch and want to know exactly which I want to see![/

all 5 girls compete on all 4 events and the lowest one thrown out and then the top girls compete a different day for individual titles

Alright so I'm bored and have been watching random videos from Euro Championships in May and I'd like to throw out a question to our resident gymnastic experts...

Why does the US consistently seem to be slacking on bars compared to other countries?? Is there something special the other countries have to train their athletes better on bars, or has the US just been focusing on the other apparatuses more? It just strikes my curiosity as to why we can only seem to have one or two athletes who really excel, while other countries have multiple athletes competing difficult skills with high execution levels.

Watching interviews on gymnastike and Sarah Finnegan is just the cutest little thing. Really glad she's going to be getting this Olympic experience so that she's even more amazing for Rio.
